The Barcelona Basic model is a Cam-Clay type effective stress model for the behaviour of unsaturated clay-type soils. In contrast to the original BBM, the Plaxis BBM is defined in terms of Bishop effective stress. A specific feature of the model is that it includes 'collapse' upon wetting.
The Barcelona Basic Model has been developed with scientific support from the Polytechnic University Catalunya (UPC). This support is gratefully acknowledged.
The Barcelona Basic Model is available as a user-defined soil model Dynamic Link Library (DLL). This DLL can be obtained Plaxis. Support on the use of the Barcelona Basic Model is only provided for this DLL under the conditions of the PLAXIS VIP support service and Article 10 of the End-User Licence Agreement.
After investigation, the current implementation of the Barcelona Basic Model as a Plaxis user-defined soil model does not work correctly for Plaxis calculations that include changing water conditions: e.g. Undrained, Consolidation and Fully Coupled Flow-Deformation analysis, but also for a Flow-only Transient groundwater flow calculation (i.e. calculations without a deformation analysis). We are currently investigating this issue in order to resolve this as soon as possible. Once we have an update, this page will be updated too.
Note: this model is only available as an experimental, academic DLL file. Please contact the Support team for more details.
