Results of two geotechnical benchmarking exercises are presented. A deep excavation problem in Berlin sand has been specified by the working AK 1.6 of the German Society for Geotechnics and a simple tunnel excavation was used by working group A of Cost Action C7. The results of these exercises clearly emphasize the need for establishing recommendations and guidelines for numerical analysis in practice.
