This tutorial illustrates the use of PLAXIS 2D for simulating the excavation of a road cut in a siltstone rock mass with the presence of a fault (discontinuity). The rock mass is characterized using the Hoek-Brown model.

To stabilise this road cut PLAXIS cable elements are used. Stability is determined based on the factor of safety (strength reduction method).

Objectives:

• Use the Gravity loading method to generate the initial stresses.
• Model the fault using the Discontinuity feature.
• Model the reinforcement with the Cables feature.
• Determine the influence of reinforcements on the factor of safety.

The attached *.p2dxlog file contains all the commands to generate the model. With a Bentley Geotechnical SELECT Entitlement [GSE] license, you can use the commands runner to open the *.p2dxlog file and to execute all commands in one go, see also this instruction.
