&lt;p&gt;This tutorial illustrates the use of PLAXIS 2D for simulating the excavation of a road cut in a siltstone rock mass with the presence of a fault (discontinuity). The rock mass is characterized using the Hoek-Brown model.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To stabilise this road cut PLAXIS cable elements are used. Stability is determined&amp;nbsp;based on&amp;nbsp;the factor of safety (strength reduction method).&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Objectives:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This tutorial illustrates the use of PLAXIS 2D for simulating the excavation of a road cut in a siltstone rock mass with the presence of a fault (discontinuity). The rock mass is characterized using the Hoek-Brown model.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To stabilise this road cut cable elements are used. Stability is determined&amp;nbsp;based on&amp;nbsp;the factor of safety (strength reduction method).&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Objectives:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;bull; Use the &lt;strong&gt;Gravity loading&lt;/strong&gt; method to generate the initial stresses.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;bull; Model the fault using the &lt;strong&gt;Discontinuity&lt;/strong&gt; feature.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;bull; Model the reinforcement with the &lt;strong&gt;Cables&lt;/strong&gt; feature.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;bull; Determine the influence of reinforcements on the factor of safety.&lt;/p&gt;
