For Log reports, is there a way to start the log a depth other than ground surface?

I have several logs that the overburden material were not logged, and the descriptions begin at the top of bedrock. On our current report template this results in a lot of blank log space (multiple pages given the depth log page required to accommodate later descriptions).  I there a way to provide a starting depth for the log descriptions to eliminate this blank space?

  • Hi Paul,
Yes you can use the Report Property Top Depth expression. It can be implemented in many ways. If you just want to do it on a one time output basis. From output Pick your report from the yellow drop down. Then click on the properties button (looks like a hand holding a sheet of paper. Manually type in the top depth you want to start the log in the top Depth expression. If you want to make this a permanent part of report design You would access the report property in the Report design tab. Goto report Design ...pick your report in the yellow drop down ...click on the properties button. In the top depth expression you can then write a smart expression. For example if you have a field (maybe in the point table where you enter top of bedrock for each point) You can then reference that field in the top depth expression. for example <<POINT.Top of Bedrock>> . You could also make the expression even more complex say let it search the lithology table for the Minimum depth where your Lithology graphic = bedrock. But there are so many options here and it would depend on how your current files are setup. If you need more details to work with your specific files (library and project). Please feel free to click on my name and e-mail me and I will contact you privately to look at you specific files.

  • Hi Kirk - Can this technique be used to reference the base of a particular layer also? For example we are logging holes below top of existing structures, however in some situations ground level is several metres below the top of structure. I am keen to use something similar to this, but am unsure how to implement.

    <<POINT.Bottom of Existing Structure>>

    Is this even possible?

  • Yes in the top depth expression in the report properties you can reference a value from a field in your database. If you are looking to show a gap in the report then you might look at the reference elevation of a report property.

There are detailed explanations of these properties under gINT help to determine which one of these properties would best suit your specific need.

In gINT go to Help search reference Elevation

In gINT go to Help search Top Depth Expression (report property)
