i am trying to add a bottom depth to the bitmap symbol properties and am not sure of the format. i have been able to get the symbol to start in the correct place, just not end.

i do not have the bottom depth expression as indicated in the attached thread.
This feature is only available in an individual body entity (bitmap symbol vs depth). It is not available in a column entity. You can either explode (click on explode button in toolbar the highlight the column hit ok) your column entity or just goto the log menu at the top and create an individual body entity. The individual body entity is probably easier.
