Combining logs of various methodologies

It seems that in its default state gINT would like you to do two different logs - one style for Cable Percussive/Soft Ground and one style for Rotary Core.  This seems to be controlled by the "Split Logs" table.

Is it possible to create logs of differing methodologies on the same log template?  So can it create a Cable Percussion log and then continue it with the Rotary section (with it bringing the correct headings in).

I have seen "Smart Logs" mentioned, but can find little in the way of Forum Discussion nor much in the manuals regarding this topic.  My understanding is that they are dynamic in that they can show/hide information on the logs dependent on whether it finds that information in the fields of the database.

  • Hi Paul,

What you are describing is how your company has the custom gINT files setup. I suspect that the setup you describe would be a standard method to accomplish the objective you mention. That is to have two very different log outputs from the same borehole based on where you have hit rock. IE a soil log and a rock log. This would generally be done with two reports taking advantage of the top and bottom depth properties of the report properties. The Soil log would end at a user specified depth (ie top rock, bottom of soil) (I suspect that is what your company setup using what you call the split log table) and the rock log begins at that depth , in other words continues on not starting at 0 but at the top of rock depth.

This does require that you output the borehole to both reports. If that is the issue your are having then that can be automated using output scripting. The Advanced output tutorial describes scripts as well as gINT help goto help menu and search scripts. This would allow you to setup the output to automatically print a borehole to the soil log and then the rock log automatically before proceding to the next borehole.

Again I am doing a bit of speculation here as these are your custom files and they can be manipulated in many ways.

  • Hi Kirk

These are not custom company files - these are as defined under the "gINT Std AGS 4.0" Library and Template that come shipped / are available for download from the Bentley website.

I am asking is it possible to do the opposite of this method and create one log report that will allow both / multiple methodologies to be shown.  I have previously used a competing piece of software and was able to create logs that swapped their styles over depending on the information contained in the AGS HDPH table.  This would show division lines where the methodology changed and could put the secondary headings at the base of the page where the methodology changes, and then place the correct headings at the top of the subsequent page.

  • The Standard AGS 4 files are setup to use the methodology I described above (using the top and bottom depth report properties) As mentioned you can automate this by scripting the output. contact me and I would be happy to talk with you. It might be possible to do something if you don't use column entities and just use a bunch of text entites and body entities , but it would be very complex to setup and we do not have anything predesigned to do this. Also where data breaks on a page would also be difficult to handle.

  • Thanks Kirk.  The two log method isn't really the ideal way I'd like to be doing this, but an alternative way doesn't seem like a it's a viable option either.  Cheers for taking the time to answer.
