gINT Alignment LandXML

We're working with a very long track alignment (with InRoads) and we would like import this alignment into gINT such that we can use it as a baseline to export the subsurface profile (fence diagrams). We've tried various XML and LandXML outputs from InRoads but gINT gives an error when we tried to import them. Has anyone tried this? Is there a very specific LandXML format that gINT needs for this import to work? Does anyone have an example of an LandXML file that gINT can import as an alignment to be used as a baseline for fence diagrams? We have about 250 miles of alignment so it would be really great if we can fully integrate various Bentley products!

    LandXML import does work, I tested it extensively when Datgel paid gINT software to create it. This is the process:

    1. Ensure you are running the latest gINT version 10.00.00.50. 
    2. Ensure you have enabled the Additional Modules > Alignment Support
    3. Go to the table: Main Group | Alignments
    4. Import the attached test file using File > Import/ Export > Import Alignment...

  • Thanks Phil! We're using gINT V8i SS2 Version 08.30.04.285 Professional Plus. Do you have a workflow suggestion for the InRoads side of things? I've finally found last night that the "AlignmentsToLandXML" format works but only when I copy and paste what shows up on the preview instead of using the export function within InRoads. I'm not great with InRoads and asking our track folks to help out on their end. Thanks for the example XML file as well. We're bridging the gap!

  • I had trouble with an alignment import recently, and if I remember correctly there is a 1000 point limit on the alignment. I had to break it up into north and south sections and import them separately

    ****Actually, I was trying to convert a polyline to alignment, and that is what has the 1000 point limit, so disregard my answer above!

  • Hi Lucy,

    This is very long alignment and it is likely too much for gINT to handle it, especially if it has long or too many curves. Curves are broken into line segments (secants) during gINT LandXML import, which dramatically increases the number of points in an incoming alignment. This will likely choke gINT.

    One workaround would be to break a long alignment into multiple alignments of maybe 10-20 mile segments, so you would have 'multiple' alignments in gINT. 

    Another possible workaround would be to import alignment as a polyline via DXF in gINT, and then turn it into baseline or alignment in gINT.

    But considering you are a gINT user, you are entitled to gINT Civil Tools, an accompanying product to gINT (no additional cost) that is MicroStation based, directly working with design files (dgn files) as InRoads. It has much greater capabilities in terms of CAD/Civil work than gINT itself. Whenever alignments, surfaces, and profiles are involved gINT Civil Tools might be a better solution. Many folks will likely be fairly soon switching from InRoads to OpenRoads, and gINT Civil Tools, besides being a standalone product, it is also included in OpenRoads, so it has direct connectivity to gINT and it is designed to deal with alignments, surfaces, profiles, sections, site plans, etc.

  • Thanks! We actually do have several ALG files to depict the alignment. But it's good to know about the limits of what we can import into gINT so we'll try the smaller segments first.

    Follow-up questions:

    1. How do we turn a polyline to a baseline or alignment in gINT? I've imported the DXF into gINT but couldn't find a way to use it as the baseline
    2. How do we get or turn on gINT Civil Tools? This sounds like a useful product.
