I am taking a look at what's involved importing  GeoTac data into gINT. Am I breaking new ground, or has this been done already via an available gINT  correspondence file?  At first glance, it seems the GeoTac files are laid out in a form that gINT cant "understand". The GeoTack creates .txt, and csv and xml but they seem not to be laid out for the gINT correspondence utility to recognize them appropriately.

Can anybody point me in the right direction.

I include a sample file that the Geotac creates

Thanks

  • You need to write gINT Rules code to pre-process the data into a gINT compatible csv file, then import it using a script on the command line.

  • yup, I can code it, but I was not wanting to reinvent the wheel if the wheel had already been made .. Am waiting on reply from equipment manufacturer for info on this matter since, surely,  I can't be the only one that is interested in this export/import capability ...  Just  like gINT can export to many different layouts, so too it would seem that the equipment makers would want to do the same so as to make their equipment attractive so users do not the world over have to create such converters. I can see some potential customers tell a manufacturer, "I like your equipment, but does it export to "xyz"  ... or import from ABC." and if the answer is NO, then turning to other suppliers.

  • Hi Art,

As Phil indicated and you have acknowledged, a gINT Rule needs to be created to import the GeoTac data into gINT.

Yes, the equipment manufacturer could provide this from their end, but it would then need to be modified for each gINT customer so that it matched their own gINT database structure. There is "no one size fits all" example gINT Rule in this case.

Now, a case could be made for using one of the "gINT Std Lab" databases as a starting point. That could be another example gINT Rules Code package put together by Bentley for downloading from their server like a number of other example gINT Rules code packages.

But, which testing machines from GeoTac would be used. I believe that they have several testing machines available.

    Regards,

  • They do indeed have several machines, I was looking at just one of them at the time I made my post, because that was what one of my colleagues had asked about over lunch, and to me, it appeared as what I call a "new shiny" ( aspect of something that sparked my interest enough that I would start posting forum messages and going down their rabbit hole,  lol)

About a converter/importer - I contacted Geotac, and they don't have a tie-in to gINT that will take their data sets and export them to gINT structured (DB) format  or, Diggs or AGS, or whatever,   and users take the info off the GeoTac output ,and then type it into  gINT ( or other log package) OR just print the geoTac data graph and put it into their final report.

The question of course is "OK", but how many of these geoTac tests do they do? If they are bangin out 1000 per year, then maybe it can pay for itself to develop a converter/importer. If they only do 5 a year in comparison to the 5000/year of some other test, then not so attractive except maybe as an intellectual exercise.

I agree that it seems that a converter would put their data into a Table structured data scheme e.g. ,Access, or into an Excel workbook with Tab, Rows, and columns, both of which the gINT correspondence utility can handle. I agree that then, the gINT user, could write their  own correspondence to get the data into their particular gINT layout. I also agree that an attractive target structure is to put the GeoTac data into a gINT Std Lab and let that be the rosetta stone for further downstream work into other gint layouts. Then again an excel structure seems attractive too because the GeoTac has a limited set of data blocks (  eventual Tabs in an Excel Layout.)
