Overlapping Text in Elevation/Depth Column

Hi Guys,

I'm having issues trying to sort out the overlapping texts of ground depth 0.0 and elevations/depths that are 0.1m below ground sufrace - all of the texts become illegible. Is there a work around for this as it also occurs sometimes within the log itself.

Thanks.

  • This happens because your text vs depth entity is set to not bump down and your layers are close together. You need to modify the entity in your report to allow the label to bump down when there is too much text and it is closely spaced similar to how your description column works.  I do not know how your entity is set up but I created an example of one way to accomplish this. There are many ways to do it.

The main tab of the depth vs text entity is set to block align  the two lines of text in the middle vertically as below.

Note the example is for a well detail. Your field names  and expressions will be different.

Since you have 2 lines of text, the line is created using the callout tab of the entity rather than a boundary line as below.

Note that since the text is right justified, the x offset is set to a negative value to begin the line to the left of the text.  The break percentage is set to 70% to make the line go horizontal between the elevation and the depth text before it breaks to the pointed to depth. The x pointed to is the left edge of the graphic in this case but would be the the right edge of your column, You will have to allow sufficient room for the break to occur without getting cluttered. Your numbers and dimensions will be different.

    The result is below

Note how the closely spaced details at the top of the well force the text to bump down and not interfere with each other where as deeper in the detail the spacing is larger and there is no need to bump down

  • Hi szang. Appreciate the response. I've tried making the edits but to no avail. Can i forward you the template and maybe we can discuss from there?

  • My example uses only the properties on the main tab and callout tab of the text vs depth entity.  All other tabs should be blank or at default values. Check that there is nothing  entered on all other tabs. In particular, check the Wrap tab and make sure the property preventing the text from bumping down is not checked and that there is no wrap width set. If you are still having trouble after that, post screen shots of your main and callout tabs and I can make some suggestions. You will have to make some adjustments to fit the callout breaks into your log.

  •
Kindly see screenshots attached. Still coming out without the callouts.

  • You appear to be using separate body entities instead of column entities.  That's OK but you will need to make the following changes.  I am assuming that the left edge of your column is at 0mm and the right edge is at 8mm. If this is wrong you will have to modify the detailed instructions below to fit the actual values.

    1. Change the x coordinate of your entity to 6.  That will leave 2 mm for your callouts to the right of the text which is right aligned. You can make this a little less to allow more room for the callouts but there will be less room for depths or elevations greater than 999.

    2. Check the box on the the main tab to "block align" (as stated above). This will center the 2 lines of text vertically on the text anchor point which will be at x=6 per #1 above.

    3. On the configuration tab there is a property "Text not pushed down by text above". It is probably checked, please uncheck it. none of the other properties on the configuration tab should be used except the design mode text display which only controls what appears on the report as you are designing it in the report editor.

    4. In the callout tab the x offset from text placement point should be -6 (That's negative 6). This moves the start of the callout from the text anchor point at x=6 to the left edge of your column at x=0.

    5. In the callout tab, Set the x pointed to to 8 which is the right edge of your column (I assumed this dimension as stated above, if it is different please make the necessary modifications).  This makes the total x length of the callout = 8 (it begins at x = 0 and ends at x = 8.

    6. You want the callout to break just after x = 6 (ie the right edge of your right aligned text) which is 75% of 8 so the break percentage should be set to 75%.  You can make it a little more if it interferes with the numbers or a little less to put a little more angle on the break portion

    7. You likely have a separate lines vs depth entity in the column that currently creates your horizontal lines at each bottom depth that do not bend down (assuming you followed my advise to remove all border lines and range lines from the text vs depth entity).  You will need to delete this entity as the line is now being created by the callout.

Your text vs depth entity seems to be based on the bottom depth of the layer.  This is fine but it will not place a elevation/depth at the ground surface (0 depth).  If you have a separate text entity that does this, the text vs depth entity will not be aware of it and it may still overwrite.  There are ways to get around this using the second text spec tab of the text vs depth entity but that gets into more modifications.
