gINT copy a boring log

How do I copy a boring log from one project to another in gINT?

  • It seems there is some confusion on what you want to do

    1. If you want to copy a boring log TEMPLATE from one library to another library, there is a utility to do this under the utilities tab in gINT. I forget what it is called, merge or something like that, and it is pretty straight forward. Open the library that you want to copy to and select the library you want to copy from. Select the items you want to merge. Be aware that log templates created in other libraries may use symbols,  data tables, user expressions, etc that may not exist in the new library so some debugging is to be expected.

    2. If you want to copy the DATA for a specific boring from one project file to another project file, and both projects use the same data structure (ie they were started from the same data template or cloned from the same project), you can simply import the boring data into the project. In the input nenu, Select data import from Data base, select the project file containing the borings, make sure the box to ask what birings you want to import is checked and then select the borings. If the projects have different data structures, you can still import the data but you will have to create a correspondence file to tell gINT where to put the incoming data.

I can provided more detailed instructions for either of the above but will not be able to do so until tonight. If neither of these is what you are trying to do, please clarify.

  • I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that what you want to do is as described in #2 above.

For this example I have a project that has 3 borings in it B-1, B-10, B-11.  I want to import the data from 2 borings called alpha 1 and Alpha 2 from another project.  Why would I want to do this? Maybe I have some borings from another nearby project that I want to include on a fence diagram with my new project.  Many possible reasons.

I assume that the data structures for both projects are the same.  If they are not you will need to create a correspondence file. If you need to do that I can help you get started but it can become a nasty process.

    1. Open the project you want to copy the boring data into

    2. Select the Input tab

    3. From the input menu select File, Import/Export, import from Database as shown in the picture below

This will bring up the import from database dialog box

    4. Select the Database file you want to copy from. Note that a gINT project file (.gpj) is a database file so it will show up in the file selection dialog.

    5. Once the file has been selected, you can select what individual borings you want to copy into the current file by clicking the dialog button at the right end of the select points field as shown in the picture below

    6. The points to merge dialog will show all the borings in the selected database file.  Note that if a boring of the same name is already in your current file it will be flagged as Exists in the dialoge and you will not be able to import it. (see picture above)

    7. Once you have selected the borings you want to import/ copy click OK and you should be ready to go. In this case you do not need a correspondence file because the data structures are the same so leave that field blank.  Leaving the Select Tables field blank will import all tables. Leave the overwrite option at never for this case.  If you are re-importing data and want it to update the existing data you will select a different overwrite option.

    8. Select OK on the import dialog and the data from the selected borings will be copied from the selected file into your current file.

Note: If this is not what you are wanting to do, please clarify your request.

  • Hi Szang! That is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much for following up with my inquiry!
