Mapping in openground Cloud professional

Good afternoon,

I have a doubt/issue when mapping in openground cloud progessional.

As shown in the image attched below, I import rotary core in easting and northing coordinates and then I convert these coordinates into latitude and longitude.

The thing is that when trying to map the rotary cores, in the easting and northing columns I need to put the latitude and longitude values in order to see the RC in the map. If I put the original values in the column that belongs each value, tha map appears as blank.

My question is that if OpenGround needs to assume the values of latitude and longitude in the easting and northing columns in order to map properly.

Thank you very much for your time and help,

JF

  • Good afternoon Joan,

Have you set a Coordinate System in your Project Details tab?  If not, that is the first thing you need to do as this will convert your Easting/Northing coordinate values to the Lat/Long fields automatically and allow your points to be shown on the map.  Open the project then click on the "Project" tab  then select "Project Details".  In the "Edit Project"  dialog that appears, select the "Configurations" tab and set the Coordinate System that your Easting(X) and Northing(Y) values are in.  If you dont see your coordinate System in the list, your Admin will have to turn it on in your Configuration Pack.  Once that is all done, entering in an Easting and Northing will automatically convert and fill in the Lat/Long fields and allow you to see them on the map - Mike

  • Good afternoon mcotreau,

First of all I want to thank your time and help in order to answer my issue.

I had set a coordinate system, which was: World Geodetic System Longitude / Latitude (WGS 84). When I set that coordinate system, The program asks me to select existing coordinates to use for location updates. I guess that in that message I need to choose the Easting / Northing option as in my imported files, the coordinats are set in that format.

When doing that, my locations don't appear in the map. Furthermore, The software does not convert automtically my easting / northing coordinates to latitude / longitude coordinates, that I guess that it is vital in order to have them in the map.

When you tell in your past answer that "If you dont see your coordinate System in the list, your Admin will have to turn it on in your Configuration Pack" what do you reffer exactly? My configuration pack is set right now as: BS British Standard - Metric. Is that correct? I don't know if you can answer me that question.

Thank you very much for your time and help, I appreciate it a lot!

  • Hi Joan,

Please see this Wiki article for more information on Coordinate Conversion. There are 2 sets of headers for Lat/Long - text and numeric. It looks like your Location Details group has the text fields active, which don't allow for coordinate conversion. You (or your OpenGround Admin) may want to activate the decimal fields so you can see the converted values.

When you select the Coordinate System, you'll want to select the projected coordinate system for your N/E values. New coordinate systems can be added if you don't see the one you need.

If you have the correct Coordinate System selected for your N/E, you should be able to import the N/E values and it will calculate the Lat/Long (in the decimal/numeric fields). Or, do the reverse and import your Lat/Long to the decimal Lat/Long fields, and it will calculate the N/E values.

  • Hi Joan,

Jesse Greenwald's response is spot on in that the likely reason you don't see the coordinates convert to Lat/Long is because your coordinate fields are probably set to text and not numeric.  Once you have followed the steps in the link Jesse provided, the next step is to sort out your coordinate values themselves, as you have a mix of values in the Easting and Northing columns.

Samantha's response indicates that you have the coordinate values reversed, and since I have no personal knowledge of the British Coordinate system(s) and the range of coordinate values within, I am going to use the values you show in your image for RC103, reverse them and assume for this discussion that the Easting (X) is 442502856.00 and the Northing (Y) is 33345929.00.  What coordinate system are these values based on?  I will assume for this discussion that those coordinate values are in the British National Grid (OSGB 1936).  If that is the case, then you need to set the project's coordinate system to match the values in the Northing and Easting columns as shown in the image below.  Once the coordinate system is set, the database knows the Coordinate System of the Northing and Easting values and will automatically convert to Lat and Long and populate those values in the Latitude and Longitude fields.

Lastly, your map's initial extent may be messed up because of your making all of these coordinate changes.  I suggest editing the Northing and easting coordinates for one point, say RC103 and see if the Lat/Long coordinates update and look correct.  then right-click on RC103 and select "Zoom on Map" and see if RC103 plots on the map in the correct location.  if it does, then update all of the other Northing and Easting values and on the Map, use the "Set Initial View" and/or "Set Project Extents" (on the far right side of Map ribbon) as appropriate.

    Good luck - Mike
