Excel Extension - how to add data markers to charts by default?

When making a chart in the Excel Extension (say, a PSD graph), by default there is only a line for the plot without data markers to indicate the underlying points. After the report is generated, the individual graphs can be edited to show data markers by right-clicking and selecting "Format Data Series". I see no option in the template at design time to select which, if any, data marker to use. Is it possible to set default behavior for data markers on charts/plots/graphs from the Excel Extension? Thanks.

  • Hi, Kirk,

    Thanks for the response.

This is what I'm trying to do, but even after following the instructions you suggest ("Styling Chart and Line Marker") and creating the graph style in the configuration pack ("Extension Graph Styles Creation"), I cannot get the chart in Excel Extension to display according to the style I created.

As background  -- the original PSD chart I used was modified from one loaded in the config pack when we started OG. It turns out the chart style was "Scatter with Straight Lines". Changing the style to "Scatter with Straight Lines and Markers" broke other parts of the chart, and I ended up making a new chart with "lines and markers" style and replacing the old chart.

Then, following the instructions in "Styling Chart and Line Marker" and "Extension Graph Styles Creation", I did the following:

    • set a style for the chart in Excel Extension (a picklist from the dropdown -- "ParticleSizeDistributionData - Test Type")
    • defined a Graph Style in the configuration pack (I called it "test PSD")
    • set the Graph Style for the picklist (in the configuration pack) to "test PSD"
    • chose a boring in my database with two PSD results and set the test type for one of them to "WS" (an item in the given picklist)

Resulting plots do not display the defined graph style and both show the same line and symbol type. The attached screenshots show the steps above.

I appreciate any help you (or anyone else) can provide.

  • Thanks for getting a detailed look at this, Martyn. I will make a service request.

Just FYI for anybody -- I made further attempts at getting this to work and found that assigning styles to LocationID worked correctly. I also tried assigning the style to a data item in a different picklist and that also failed. The problem seems to occur when assigning styles to a picklist group as described in "Extension Graph Styles Creation".
