    Where Can I get a list of example Geology and Legend Codes for the Civil 3D Extension?

    Answer

    There is no standard list of codes available within the software as these are dependant on what is found on the field. There is a standard list found within OpenGround based off of the AGS standard. However, this is not a definitive list and can be deviated from.

    Explanation

    The Legend Code is used to associate a hatch pattern for display in the legend of geological strip. It therefore represents a description of the appearance of material, usually as observed in the field.

    The Geology Code represents the classification applied to material as applied by a Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist. It therefore takes account of properties of the material which may not be immediately observable in the field, such as the results of laboratory testing. Typically, this information may be presented on a geological strip as an alternative to the Legend Code based strip. The OpenGround Cloud Civil 3D Extension is shipped with a few examples of both Legend Codes and Geology Codes. These are intended to be merely illustrative, users setting up their own codes (and associated patterns) under the Hatch Manager. The example Legend Codes are taken from the AGS data transfer format, as commonly used in the UK. Within this format a three digit number is used to distinguish between different patterns. They are numbered in a logical manner - e.g., 1nn represent different types of topsoil/fill, 2nn represent different types of clay, 3nn different types of silt. However, the format allows for additional codes to be added.

    Under the rules of the format there is no definitive list of acceptable geology codes - users are free to define whatever is appropriate for their project. Thus the examples shipped with the Civil 3D Extension should be consider illustrative rather than definitive - either "MADE GROUND" or "MG" could be considered acceptable. Other examples of Geology Codes which are commonly used might include the USCS, ASTM, AASHTO or adopting the corporate geology codes of the consultant organisation.

    Users of the Civil 3D Extension are not bound to use the AGS format, however, CSV import clearly being an option. Where the Legend and/or Geology Code are represented in the file they can be imported into the system and patterns associated with them under the Hatch Manager. However, the feature is designed to be 'open'. That is, whatever values are contained in these columns may be considered acceptable and patterns can be created for them under the Hatch Manager.
