Why can't I Depth Link certain tables together in OpenGround Cloud Professional?

    Question

Why can't I use depth linking to join certain tables together?

    Answer

Depth linking in a powerful tool for joining grids together which have no natural link beforehand, but not every grid can be joined together.

For example it is not possible to join two lab testing tables together and add fields from one to the other, but it is possible to add Geology fields to the Sample Information Table and all its child tables.

    Explanation

Out of the box OpenGround Cloud Professional comes pre-configured to allow the joining of fields from the Geology table to Sample Information and SPT Results. The Geology Table has become a "Depth Parent" by default meaning that any table which has a depth field can potentially be joined to Geology.

This is a special case as the main use cases require adding geology fields to other tables but, there are other tables that can be set up as a depth parent also. The below is an example of using the Fracture Spacing table set as a Depth Parent.

Now it will be joined to the Sample Table so if you select manage grids from within the Sample Table group you will see Fracture Spacing appear and can add fields from that table to the Sample table.

The restrictions will be apparent though if you attempt to join tables which do not have independent Depth Top and Base as key fields. In that instance they cannot be set a depth parent.

A real use case example of an attempted table join is adding fields from Point Load Testing to Rock Uniaxial Compressive Strength and Deformability Tests. Both are child tables of Sample Information but they do not have independent depth top and base key fields, instead they use their parent(Sample) tables top and base and as such are not able for joining.

If depth linking is not available an alternative solution is using Report Views.

If a custom Report View is required this can be requested off our Consultancy Team and a charge "may" be incurred.
