gINT Coordinate Conversion provides capabilities to convert between projected (east/north) and geographic (longitude/latitude) coordinates. The gINT Professional Plus license includes a coordinate conversion library.  This facility allows automatic conversion between different coordinate systems.  This is the same library that is shipped with other coordinate aware Bentley products (MicroStation, InRoads, Bentley Map, etc.).  This allows your gINT Professional Plus .gpj or enterprise project to interact with ArcGIS, Google Earth and Bentley GeoWeb Publisher, among other geo applications.

Note: You will need a license for gINT Professional Plus to use these features.

How do we automatically convert northing and easting to latitude and longitude, or vice versa?

For the selected coordinate system, gINT will automatically calculate either WGS84 latitude and longitude from north and east values, or the other way around.  Follow these steps to implement this:

    1. Open the project, either a .gpj or an enterprise database.  In INPUT, go to the the PROJECT tab.
      tab.
    2. On the menu bar, click Tables   Coordinate Fields.  This adds 2 new columns on the right: WGS84 Latitude and WGS84 Longitude.  Before using these fields, you will have to select the coordinate system and units.
    3. Go to the PROJECT tab.
    4. In Coordinate System, click the ellipsis   button.  The Coordinate System dialog opens.
    5. Expand Library   Projected (northing, easting).  Select the appropriate system.  Click Ok.
    6. Enter an elevation offset, if needed.
    7. Select the coordinate units, meters or feet.
    8. Go to the POINT tab.  It may be called something different in your project, e.g. BOREHOLE or LOCATION.
      You will see this message:

    9. As you don't yet have latitude and longitude values, click either Yes or No.
    10. WGS84 Latitude and WGS84Longitude now have data converted from your northings and eastings.

If you enter latitude and longitude, gINT will calculate the northing and eastings.

If you enter both North and East, and WGS84 Latitude and WGS84 Longitude, gINT will convert from North and East, overwriting the values in WGS84 Latitude and Longitude.

When outputting a fence diagram or site map from multiple projects in an Enterprise database, if the coordinate systems are different, the program will determine the UTM zone at the center of all the boreholes and project all the coordinates to that zone. This ensures that the relative positions of the boreholes are as accurate as possible. This facility is available in Enterprise mode only.

I don't want to add gINT's Coordinate Conversion to my project file/database.  Is there another way to use it?

Yes, with the Coordinate Converter tool.  You can convert between 2 different systems, entering either east/north or lat/long data and getting the results in either north/east or lat/long.  It will also convert between feet and meters.

    1. From any INPUT tab, on the menu bar, select Tools   Coordinate Converter.
    2. Select your source and destination systems.  Enter your X and Y data.  Select units, if needed.  Click Convert.

We use a coordinate system that is not in your coordinate conversion library.  Is there a way to add it?

If your coordinate system is not listed you can add it using Bentley Map.  Download this PowerPoint presentation for information on how to do this.

The PROJECT tab requires a projected system for the coordinate conversion to work.  When we're in the field we only have lat/long data.  Can gINT help find the correct system?

Yes.  In INPUT, on the menu bar, select Tools   Projected Systems from Latitude and Longitude.  This will give you a list of all projected systems that encompass the specified lat and long.

Select a system and click Details for Selected System... for more information.
