Working from home with gINT Civil Tools

To ensure a smooth transition of work and effectiveness of your daily workflows with gINT Civil Tools we have assembled this wiki to help ensure a smooth transition of work from home with gINT applications.

When working remotely, the best practice is to send a company issued laptop or access remotely.

If you are accessing files from a laptop at home and your accessing gINT files (project, library) that are located on a company server you would need VPN access.

The user may experience slowness or a perceived lag in performance. The perceptions may be caused due to a variety of non-gINT Civil Tools hurdles such as Wi-Fi bandwidth, VPN bandwidth, etc. An alternative would be to copy your gINT files locally (project, library).

    Installation

    Installation Requirements

A CD drive or access to the Internet is required for product installation. The minimum sys tem configuration for installation is:

    Supported Operating Systems
    • Windows 10 (64-bit) - Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education
    • Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - Standard, Pro, and Enterprise
    • Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit) - Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate
    • Windows Server 2012 (64 bit)
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1(64 bit) - Standard and Enterprise
Note: Windows 7 operating system is supported only if you have its service pack (SP1) installed.
Note: You must have the following Microsoft updates installed on your machine:
    • KB2999226 - For Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, and Windows Server 2012
    • KB2919355 - For Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012

Bentley does not support its software running on Microsoft operating systems versions that Microsoft has "retired". For more information on Microsoft's application retirement policy, click here. For similar information on Bentley products, refer to the Bentley Product Support article.

    Communications Protocols
    • Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4)
    • Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)
Software Prerequisites The Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications are automatically downloaded and installed to your workstation while you install gINT Civil Tools Professional Plus. The contents of the Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications include:
    • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2
    • Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications core
    • Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications localized

Microsoft Internet Explorer, minimum v11.0, with 128-bit cipher strength. Microsoft no longer supports any versions prior to v11.0. Internet Explorer is not installed as part of the product pre-requisites.

Copyrights in all components are owned by Microsoft Corporation or one of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or licensors.

    Minimum Profile

The minimum recommended workstation profile for running gINT Civil Tools CONNECT Edition is:

Processor Intel® or AMD® processor 1.0 GHz or greater. gINT Civil Tools is not supported on a CPU that does not support SSE2.
Memory 4 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended. More memory almost always improves performance, particularly when working with larger models.
Hard Disk 20 GB free disk space (which includes the 12 GB install footprint for a complete installation)
Video See the graphics card manufacturer for latest information on DirectX drivers. 512 MB of video RAM or higher is recommended. If insufficient video RAM or no graphics card supported by DirectX can be found, gINT Civil Tools Professional Plus attempts to use software emulation. For optimal performance, graphics display color depth should be set to 24-bit or higher. When using a color depth setting of 16-bit, some inconsistencies will be noted. For more information on recommended workstation profiles for gINT Civil Tools Professional Plus, see MicroStation System Requirements and Hardware Recommendations.
    Screen Resolution 1024 x 768 or higher.

    Downloading Software

All Bentley software is downloaded from the Bentley Software Downloads pages: https://softwaredownloads.bentley.com/

General download and installation directions are available here.

    • You need to be a CONNECTED user to download and use gINT.
    • During of installation of products, the CONNECTION Client will also be installed.
      • The Bentley CONNECTION Client is the mechanism to sign-in and entitle all current Bentley applications.
      • Sign-in using your work email address. If your company has a federated sign-in with Bentley, then the password will be your company password, otherwise use your Bentley password.
    • After initial connection, you can check out a license to work offline if necessary, see Reserving a License

gINT Civil Tools has two license levels: gINT Civil Tools Professional and gINT Civil Tools Professional Plus. Unlike gINT, the tier you download from Bentley's Fulfillment center is the tier you install. You want to be sure to download and install the level of gINT Civil Tools that matches the license level of gINT for your organization and/or on your PC to avoid term licenses or overage charges .

If you are a current gINT user, Civil Tools Professional and Professional Plus are included with your gINT Professional or Professional Plus license and Annual SELECT or ELS subscription. You can download, install, and use it at any time.

You do not need to have gINT installed to install gINT Civil Tools. However, it will still register as a license usage of gINT.

    Sharing Configurations And Project Data

When you’re working remotely, you are still part of a team and therefore sharing of project data is crucial. This is where the Configuration system shines. No matter where you are, you can be sure to be using the correct CAD standard with server-based Configurations. If your system has already been configured to use server-based resources virtualization and remote desktop access results in a similar experience to working in the office, there may be some graphic latency, but the system will be identical.

Attempting to connect to a configuration on office-based shares via VPN may be possible, depending on your IT systems, but is likely to be subject to significant latency, especially with many more VPN users than usual. Working with a local copy of the network configuration may be more appropriate. Applications can be configured to automatically switch to a local configuration for home working. The linked solution is primarily aimed at short term scenarios. If longer term home working becomes a necessity, a remote access or document management solution may be the appropriate option to avoid problems with version control and duplication of documents.

If your system is not currently configured to share standards and data planning for home working may be an opportunity. CONNECT Edition is easier to reconfigure to the network than previous versions. In outline, one of the simplest and effective ways of work sharing is by storing your standards and project data in a common network locations and pointing every user’s configuration to those locations. Some guidance on achieving this can be found in:
