Darwin Designer considering fire flow?

Hello,

I am working on darwin designer for WaterGems V8i (select series 5). i am having a problem how to design the system under fire flow condition?

it is required in our project to consider all junction as fire nodes . and when i try to use demand adjustment it gives me over estimated pipe sizes and fails in feasibility check.

question 1 : how to consider fire flow for all nodes in darwin designer?

question 2 : i have classified the pipes in 3 design groups (Trunk, main collector and branches) would that give me an appropriate design results? should i imply more design groups?

question 3 :  i have used customer meters demand in some projects as update for select series 5, now i have a problem using darwin designer for those files as it does not consider customer meter as demand in the mode. how to handle this?

note: i don't have the access to the latest select series patch update.

thanks

  • Hello Ahmed,

For item 1, there is a topic in the Help documentation called "Advanced Darwin Designer Tips". The first part of this section discusses the application of fire flow results in Darwin Designer.

For item 2, the number of design groups is up to your engineering judgment. You can include more if they are generally alike, though you may need to adjust the Options for the automated feature to allow for more trials to be attempted. Some information on the Option tab and possible adjustments you can make are found in the Help documentation and at the following link: communities.bentley.com/.../using-darwin-designer

For item 3, a future release of WaterGEMS will allow for Customer Meter elements to be used in Darwin Designer and Darwin Calibrator. Based on current information, this should be in the next release of the product. An announcement will be posted to the forum when the new version of WaterGEMS is available.

  • Thanks for responding,

regarding item 1 i tried to involve fire flow by adjusting demand and add the fire needed at each node and it gives me fail in feasability check and tremendous increase in demand (it seems the model sums the demand all together in every node but it in fire analysis it presume the fire demand at each node and study it individually)

for item 3 i wander if there is any method to convert demands from customer meteres to unit demand in nodes liek to use model builder or user data extension tool.

    regards
  • Hello Ahmed,

For item 1, what demands are you applying to the model? You will not want to apply the extra fire flow demand to each junction, but rather apply the fire flow demand at the most important part of the model (i.e., where fire flow demands are most important). Please see the Help documentation for additional information on this.

For item 3, you may need to apply the information in the customer meter directly to the junctions. You may want to use LoadBuilder to apply the data to the junctions instead of customer meter elements.

    Regards,
    Scott
  • Ahmed,

Re: item 3 - Please see the below Support Solution for details on an update to SELECTseries 5 to enable the use of the customer element with Darwin Calibrator and Designer:
