Area of inclined surge shaft

In a hydro power project having 10m dia Headrace tunnel (HRT), due to site conditions it is not possible to provide vertical surge tank. Instead, an inclined tunnel 1(V):10 (H) with one end connected to HRT and other end open to sky with spilling capability has been provided. While inputting area of surge tank element, do I need to enter cross sectional area or plan area of surge tunnel. If possible kindly provide share some reference.

    Here is how I interpret your situation - please correct if I am wrong:

    The Variable Area table for a surge tank in HAMMER is a table of depth ratio to volume ratio. So, you are entering the percent of the total volume below each vertical increment (depth) of the surge tank:
