SWMM Interface Files

I'm currently running a rather large model that has somewhat extensive hydrology, and I was looking at the option of using the SWMM interface files (rain file, runoff file, RDII file) to save the hydrological results so I don't have to rerun them every time I run the model.

In the calculation options I have it set to save the results for all 3 of these and have specified the file path, but after running it doesn't seem to save anything to this location. I'm assuming if I have it set to save it should save the results in the location I specify and then in future runs I can change this field to "use" to use the results that were previously calculated.

I can find very little information on these features for use in SewerGEMS. Do I have it set up right? Has anyone else encountered problems in using this feature?

Thanks,

David

  • Hello David,

I assume you have catchment and storm data in the model before running this. If so, try saving this to another location, such as your local C drive. If there is a restriction or connectivity issue going to the network, this might impact this function.

  • Yes, the model is up and running with rain and catchments. The only problem is it doesn't seem to be saving anything.

I tried running the model with the save location on my C drive but still no luck.
  • Hello David,

Could you send us the files you have? There are two options for sharing your model files on Communities. If you would like the files to be visible to other members, compress the files into a zip file and upload them as an attachment using the ‘Advanced Reply editor’ before posting. If your data is confidential, you can follow the instructions in the link below to send it to us via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley.

If you upload the files to Sharefile, please post here with the name of the file so we know it is available. Include any rain data you already have with the model as well.

    Regards,
    Scott
  • The model has been uploaded with the name Joliet Combined Sewer System.

    Thanks,
    David
  • I just realized I did not have the "Always Compute Hydrology" box checked, so the hydrology may not have been computing. But even when I ran it again it didn't fix my problem. There are still no interface files that get saved.

Is unchecking the "Always Compute Hydrology" box a good alternative to using the SWMM interface files? Under what circumstances will SewerGEMS still compute the hydrology even if the box isn't checked? If it doesn't re-run the hydrology it just takes the previous hydrology results and uses them to compute the routing/hydraulics?

    Thanks,

    David
