WaterCAD contour smoothing

I use contours to present pressures and fire flows in systems.  Why is it that when I use the contour smoothing feature, the contours cross each other, loop over themselves, and extend to areas outside the system?  Is there a way to correct this?

  • I recommend using the straight line contours as they are more accurate. The smooth contours are adjusted from the straight line contours and the issues you mentioned are common when the straight lines they were created from are sharp (acute) angles.

  • Just to reinforce Craig's comment, the smoothing algorithm we use looks at each contour individually and doesn't consider adjacent contours. The best way to avoid overlap is to simply use a wider contour interval.

The quality of any contour depends on the density of data points. A model with 100,000 nodes will have a much better looking contour plot than one with 10 nodes.
