SewerGems does not seem to be able to handle EPA SWMM import file with Transects. Is there a workaround?

To test this, I've even created a file in SewerGems, exported it to EPA SWMM, then without editing the exported file, importing it back into SewerGems and Sewergems still reports a formatting error in the TRANSECTS data.  Does anyone have a workaround?

  • Hello John,

What version of SewerGEMS are you using?

I tested this in a sample file in the latest version (CONNECT Edition, 10.00.00.40) by using the irregular cross section in a cross section node element, and it appeared to export to EPA-SWMM (5.1) as a transect. I was able to import it back into SewerGEMS without error. The cross section did not import back in though, because the channel element is not directly supported in EPA-SWMM (you'll get a notification about this on export, at least in the latest version) and so it is imported as a manhole.

However, if you use a conduit to define an irregular channel, it should survive a round-trip. Meaning, choose the "irregular channel" Section Type. When opening the exported INP file in EPA-SWMM (5.1), the transect was present and associated, and when importing it back into SewerGEMS, the irregular channel cross section shape was still there for that conduit.

If this does not help, you can send in the data files and steps to reproduce:

  • Jesse,

We performed many trial and error runs last week and we came to the same conclusion.  So we finally had a .inp file that SewerGems would actually read.  However, SewerGems does not read the .inp file that EPA SWMM produces (EPA SWMM 5.1.012 SewerGems 08.11.04.54 64-bit) without significant manipulation.  It gets hung up on extra spaces, carriage returns and lots of weird stuff.  It was very frustrating as we worked through the formatting puzzle and we were never able to have an EPA "outfall" come in successfully.

I have forwarded the EPA SWMM .inp file, the SewerGems created .inp file and the SewerGems .stsw file all for the same simple model. We worked with these files for a significant time to trouble shoot the input error.  Please let me know if you are able to import into SewerGems.  We finally did and it wasn't easy!

    Thanks

    John

  • Hello John,

Sorry to hear about your struggles with the data exchange problem.

The problem appears to be with the version you're using (V8i SELECTseries 4). The next version after that introduced more robust support for SWMM 5.1-generated files. (I believe 5.1 may have been released after SELECTseries 4). You can read a note about that in the article Whats new in SewerGEMS V8i SELECTseries 5

I was able to import your SWMM 5.1 file in the latest version of SewerGEMS (CONNECT Edition) without any problems. I would recommend upgrading. You can read about other features and enhancements made to SewerGEMS in the above article and this one about the CONNECT Edition:
