Include Conduit flow travel time in design option in StormCad and CivilStorm

I am using stormcad v8i select series 5 and civil storm v8i select series 5 version with micro station  , I Kept the " Include Conduit flow travel time in design " to true, in both applications, but it is taking only rainfall intensity  corresponding to minimum travel time (i.e; 10 min. ).Accordingly I am getting larger flows and large pipe sizes in rational method. Is there any specific reason for that. one more thing first I made the layout in CivilStorm and then tried the same model by opening in stormCad. need urgent solution.

  • Hello Prasad,

The calculation option you mentioned is related to the flows used during the automated design routine, but I think you may be referring to something else. Are you saying that the program does not appear to be adding the pipe travel time to your system flow time? The result you see in the model after calculation is the result of an Analysis run, whereas the calculation option in question is related to how the program works internally while sizing pipes during the automated design calculations.

Have you checked the travel time in the conduit and the system flow time in the next downstream node? Also, check the Tc of the catchment; if it is less than the Minimum Tc set in the calculation options, the system flow time will adopt the minimum Tc.

To assist you further with this, it would greatly help to have a copy of the model files. See: Sharing Hydraulic Model Files on the Haestad Forum

  • Mr. Dringoli,

Thank you for your answer.  Time of concentration is adding up properly , but rainfall intensity it is taking same for all pipes , it is not taking corresponding rainfall intensity with respect to time of concentration for calculating the discharge. it is taking minimum rainfall intensity for the selected design period and applying to all pipes .

  • Unfortunately I do not see the files on our Sharefile system. Please be sure to compress them into one zip file first and upload that single file.

  • files uploaded .please check

  • Hello Prasad, thanks for sending the files. It appears that there is some type of corruption in your IDF curve and the program appears to be reading the wrong intensities. To resolve this, please create a new IDF storm event and re-add your return events, durations and intensities. I did this manually for the 2 year event, copy/pasting the list of durations and intensities. I switched the rainfall runoff alternative to this new return event and after computing, the conduit intensity values appeared to be correct.

Note that I tested this in the latest version, 10.00.00.45. Please check in your version and let us know if this helps.

  • Thanks, Jesse

yes, you  are correct. I created New IDF storm events , now it is working fine. Thanks for your valuable support.

  • Hi Prasad, glad to help. Note that I have reported the model to our developers to see if there is a reason why it got in this state, and possible fix for a future release. The reference defect is 726979 and Service Request 7000658392
