Shape sections of conduits

Hi

1- What is difference between 'Rectangular Channel' and 'Box' conduits in SewerGEMS?

2- How can I have full formulas of section shapes of conduits? Help document has a summary of each formulas (e.g. Basket-handle section) and I want to know more about.

  • Hello Hoshi,

A rectangular channel is simply an open channel with a rectangular cross section. A box conduit on the other hand is a type of conduit/pipe whose cross section is a square or a rectangle. Major difference in these two is that a "channel" will be open from top whereas a "conduit" will be closed all around. Hence a channel is used to model a gutter, ditch or stream whereas a conduit is used to model an underground pipe.

An example of a box conduit

Here is the relevant wiki article distinguishing channels and conduits in general; Conduit vs. Channel

As regards the formulae for different conduit shapes here is the reference; Stormwater Conveyance Modeling and Design

    Hope this helps.

I searched the book but could not find the formulas I am looking for them (e.g. Catenary shape). The book has some of shapes especially channels. Help document refers to SWMM. From where can I get them?

  • Hello Hoshi,

The equation for Catenary Shape is available in the Help Menu of SewerGEMS software. Please see attached screenshot.

Also can you share what system are you modeling? This will help me in providing a solution to your query.
