Creating Thiessen polygons for inlets in StmCAD or CS model

Hi,

I recall using Thiessen polygons workflow directly in WaterGems a couple of years ago to allocate demands to junctions. Don't we have this tool in StmCAD or Civil Storm. I imagine we can make use of it directly within the software to define / process some catchments rather than the back and forth export and import of inlets / catchments and needing a GIS tool to define those Voronoi polygons to import in the model builder?

Is it there but I am not aware of how to use it or it is not provided? can it be added as a feature?

  • Hello AHQ,

Thiessen Polygons are used in LoadBuilder to help import loading data. For that reason, it is something is used in SewerGEMS and SewerCAD, which also deal with this type of loading. However CivilStorm and StormCAD mainly focus on flow from catchments, rather than on loading data. This is why the Thissen Polygon generation is not included.

One thing you may want to look at is catchment delineation. This is a process where you can use DTM files to help create catchments and catch basins in your model.

  • Hi Scott,

The "catchment delineation tool  sounds a new thing. Was it introduced in the CONNECT edition?

I'll give it a look and see how to utilize in our workflow. I'm interested to see how that woks in flat terrains. Also, if you can limit the delineation to a pre-defined work area (say you want the tool to do certain areas while other areas will be defined via other criteria like proximity or manually)

Earlier we used what I described above but utilizing Esri ArcGIS to process the catchments before importing via model builder. See below snapshot for how the catchments within the right of way are defined around the catch basins.

  • Yes, Catchment Delineation was added in the CONNECT Edition release. You can read all the details in the wiki article that Scott linked to in his previous reply, including two YouTube video demonstrations (see links at bottom of article).
