Volume of Storm Water Attenuation Tank

Hi;

I am designing storm water network for one project in KSA, Storm water peak flow generated from the site is high value, so we have one alternative to make stormwater attenuation tank. My questions as follows:-

1) How I determine the required volume of this attenuation tank using civil storm of sewergems?

2) What is the difference between the pond provided in Bentley products and the attenuation tank ?

Kindly if you can provide example or steps to calculate tank volume it will be great help

  • Hello Sayed,

    In CivilStorm or SewerGEMS you can use the pond element to model the attenuation tank. You can design pond by either entering the pond dimensions like area vs. elevation , manually based on your field conditions, which will give you the storage/volume of the pond. Based on the results you can change the inputs to get the desired results.

    Or you could use the tool called Pondmaker to design the pond, the below links explain, how to model pond using Pondmaker. The first link is video demonstration and second is wiki article.

    Video-Pond design start to finish in under five minutes with PondMaker

    Using PondMaker

  • Hello Sushma;

    Thanks a lot for your reply. kindly note that I do not know what is the pre-development conditions of the project  site, what I have is the peak flow of pre-development stage which is 300 l/sec. but for post development, i know the conditions and the peak flow of 1200 l/sec, so how can I determine the volume based on that.

    Thanks

  • Hello Sayed,

     If you don’t know the pre-development conditions then you can directly go for post-development scenario and use Pondmaker, then in the target flow/volume source you can mention as user defined and then enter the target peak outflow and volume.

    Otherwise model the post-development conditions in the model, if you know the bottom elevation to be reached for pond and top elevation, then enter elevation vs. area data for pond which will give you volume of pond. You can right click on pond > graph > select volume field.

    If you don’t want to do it manually then use Pondmaker as mentioned above. In the step 3 you will get the volume of the pond calculated and the freeboard and max surface water, based on which you can change pond dimensions if required.
