Query related to Bentley Storm Cad select series 4

Respected Bentley Experts,

How can make a LandXml file to take in StormCAD v8i using a terrain model ?

  • Hello Vidhi,

    Since you are using StormCAD SS4 you have the option of bringing in a LandXML file to assign elevations to your model via the "TReX" tool. The "Terrain Model" Tool on the other hand allows you to view your contours and assign elevations to your nodes.

    TRex and Terrain Models are two different tools used. Which are you inquiring about? Also the Terrain Models tool is available from Select Series 5 (SS5) and later versions.

    The following tech-note outlines the use of the TReX tool;

    Using Terrain Extractor (Trex)

    To prepare a LandXML file you have to first get your digital survey data (in the form of shapefiles, point files, 3D polylines etc.) onto a platform such as Bentley's PowerCivil or MicroStation. You can also use AutoCAD Civil 3D for this.

    Once the data is collected onto the platform you must create a surface connecting the survey data and then export it as a LandXML file.

    However, if you have an exiting shapefile, DTM, DXF or other acceptable formats you can directly bring in via TReX, the elevations to assign to your nodes.

    Hope this helps.

  • yes I have shape file of DEM and then tried with using the Autocad civil 3D and also tried with using the surfer software, but could not export in LandXML file.

  • Hello Vidhi,

    If you have a shapefile you can directly use it in TReX;

    Hope this helps.

  • but we can use Trex for input the elevation data only. Isn't it? Can it connect the catchment with catch basin Automatically? I want to do that.

  • Hello Vidhi,

    As pointed out in my earlier responses, TReX can be used for getting elevation data only. To delineate catchments you must use the terrain model tool for which you have to upgrade to the latest version (10.01.01.04) as it is not available in Select Series 4.

    Hope this helps.

  • To add to Yashodhan's reply - regarding the subject of assigning catchments to outflow nodes -

    The catchment delineation feature will create new catchments based on a terrain model and will automatically assign them to catchbasins.

    If you have existing catchments and need to assign a large number of them to catchbasins, see the suggestions in the below article:

    Assigning Catchment Outflow Node and Tc Automatically (in bulk)
