How to use wet well & pump combination in SewerGEMS?

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am designing sewerage network using SewerGEMS. Right now I am using outfall as a pumping station instead of our Wet Well. Collected sewage flow at outfall/pumping station I need to add that flow to next higher or proposed near by Manhole (where I am discharging flow) manually. I need to do this exercise number of times frequently. So by using wet well & pump combination is it possible to reduced this manual exercise??

Because number of proposed pumping station are more in my case. Please guide me so I will use that function. Please also suggest me that what are the basic data require for using Wet Well & Pump.

Thanking You

  • Hello Rohit,

It is always better to model the conditions as they are on field, so if you are lifting the water from wet well into next gravity manhole using pump stations, then you should model pump , wet well & pressure pipes as well in the SewerGEMS model. So instead of outfall, you should discharge water into wet-well>pressure pipe>pump>manhole...

To understand how to set up wet well, pump, manhole & pressure pipes, please have a look at sample models 3 & 4 located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\SewerGEMS\Samples.

Data required for wet well is base level/elevation of wet well, initial & maximum elevation, its diameter/sizes etc. & that for the pump is pump curve / definition, pump on-off levels, pump elevation, invert level etc.

Please have a look at these examples, you will understand how to input data & what is required as well.

  • Rohit,

Can you tell us a bit more about why you are wanting to directly pass the wetwell inflow into the downstream receiving gravity manhole? Are you trying to assume an "ideal pump" for preliminary design, before the pump is sized? Which numerical solver are you using?

In SewerGEMS you have the option of using the GVF-Convex solver, which is typically used for design, as it has an automated design capability. The automated design capability in the GVF-Convex solver does not apply to pressure pipes/pumps, but you could potentially use the "Use Pumped Loads" calculation option to directly pass the wetwell inflow into the next downstream manhole. You'd still need to connect a wetwell, pump and pressure pipes, but this might be what you're looking for. See related article from our Wiki: Modeling an Ideal Pump (Outflow matches Inflow)
