How to set up the discharge pressure and flow of pumps?

Can I fix the discharge pressure and flow of the pump with the SCADA data to make the model fit the real situation?

  • Yes, but again depends on what sort of real time simulation you are looking for, Steady-state or EPS?

Remember as most of the networks are demand oriented, the demand patterns define the pump selection and operation but not the vice versa.

  • If you have built you model and entered data perfectly, the model should exactly agree with the SCADA data. However, there are many reasons why a model and SCADA data might not agree. You need to identify the reason and correct it.

    Some of the reasons include:

    Incorrect pump curve

    Incorrect elevations

    Inaccurate SCADA sensors

    Inaccurate Tank/reservoir levels

Errors in pipe connectivity or other properties

    Just to name a few.

If you aren't really trying to model the pumps accurately but are only interested in the system, then you may be able to set the pump discharge as a reservoir HGL (Hydarulic Grade Line) or a known inflow (negative demand). If yo use this type of shortcut, you can't guarantee that the pump will be operating o nits curve. If you force the HGL, then you need to check the pump and if you force the discharge, you need to check the HGL.

  • In addition to the information above, the following link may have some useful information on SCADAConnect Simulator in general: SCADAConnect Simulator for WaterGEMS.

  • If you want to force a known inflow into the system, you would change the reservoir into a junction and place a negative demand at the junction. The downside of this approach is that the HGL at that point will be whatever is necessary and will not necessarily be the reservoir level. If you have a real reservoir, this is not usually a good approach.

Remember that you need at least one tank or reservoir in the system,  to establish the HGL.

  • Here is another article to supplement Tom's answer regarding setting an inflow: Modeling an inflow (negative demand) in WaterCAD or WaterGEMS
