Extended Period Simulation

Hello,

I'm running into an issue with an EPS simulation that I'm running and can't seem to resolve an issue. I'm running the model for week long time period and will eventually attempt to run constituent analyses with it for an emergency chlorination program. The issue I'm running into is with 1 of the 3 reservoirs in the system, this reservoir has a tendency to crash the model when it needs to be filled. The other reservoirs seems to be running fine. I think with this issue resolved and some refining, the model will be ready to proceed forward (I'm hoping). I've linked the model for help in obtaining assistance.

One complex thing that may be a source of this problem is that there is a joint use reservoir that is shared between this system and an adjacent system. We do not have SCADA data for that system, but we eventually decided upon using a FCV with a pattern based hourly demand that will call of water to and from this reservoir.

There are many controls in this system and am happy to walk someone through them if they can help me. Thank you for any assistance or guidance you're able to provide.

Please call me at 425-951-5466 if calling is better than the forum.

  • Gregg Davidson,

I've downloaded your model for analysis and will post back here with the results I find unless a phone call would be more appropriate.

    Thank-you,

    Larry

  • Helo Gregg,

I had a quick look at your model, the controls on tanks are not setup properly, you should manage controls such that the tank never reaches 100 % full. In that case it will close the adjacent pipe, with unrealistic hydraulic grade lines in the model and network unbalanced issues.

In your model when tank reaches 100 % it closes the adjacent pipe changing the hydraulics of the model. E.g. tank - Crest Reservoir is full 100 % at multiple time-steps.

  • This is a helpful tip, but i'm still not able to resolve some of the underlying issues with the tanks. I've updated my model accordingly and tried to revise some of the issues I've been running into. Here is the updated model that I'm currently working with. The EPS Calibration Scenario is the one I'm most particularly concerned with.

  • Hello Gregg,

Here are my comments, please check following,

    • For PRV - PRV-W4-3, HGL setting is set to 571.4, but that much pressure cannot be maintained so PRV fails, if you are reducing HGL setting to 565 it will work. With current setup of PRV, the results are unrealistic, as set HGL cannot be achieved.
    • Check controls on pump - PMP-Well2R, which is not turning on the pump, you might want to delete the below selected control of FCV and reset the priorities then the pump will start delivering the flow as required.
    • System is disconnected because of pump PMP-196BPS-500gpm, as it is off and there are no controls to turn it on, unless you want that pump station not to turn on.
    • There are user notifications about FCV - 0.5 MG 300 Zone FCV not delivering the flow, but it is part of your controls based on HGL of tank -  T-0.5 MG 300 ZONE, please check this setting again, as because of this the network is disconnected. And PRV - PRV-196BPS also disconnects the network as it closes due to control, which is part of same mentioned control.

    Hope, this helps.
