Ground Water Lowering by perforated Pipes

Hi,

I have a project to lower the groundwater table in a specific area about 20 ha by laying perforated pipes at shallow depth.

Please let me know that Civil Storm software can model the network and can calculate the flows and draw down. If yes, please share the deign steps and tell which parameters and data is required for modeling.

    With the Explicit (SWMM) solver (selected in the calculation options), you can take advantage of the groundwater module. The aquifer is defined under Components > SWMM Extensions > Aquifers, and the groundwater information is entered in the catchment properties when "apply groundwater?" is set to "true".

    Thanks for your reply. I need further confirmations

    There is a water logged area where water table is very high. And there is no surface water intersection or infiltration to ground water due to rain. Only the groundwater table is high.

    The project requirement is to lower the groundwater table up to 1m below ground surface.

     Can civil storm model the network of perforated pipes laying at 1.5m below the ground surface. And the ground water table will be lowered. Please confirm.

  • Hello Ahmad,

    To model the perforated pipe and its interaction with groundwater, we would recommend that you try using the SWMM Groundwater extensions as previously mentioned, via the SWMM solver and EPA-SWMM catchment runoff method.

    There are several parameters to enter for SWMM groundwater, and I am not aware of any readily available documents to guide further on these parameters. For example, the flow between the pipe and the groundwater table is defined by this equation:

    QL = A1(HGW - HCB)B1 - A2(HSW - HCB)B2 + A3(HGW HSW)

    where QL = lateral groundwater flow (cfs per acre or cms per hectare), HGW = height of saturated zone above bottom of aquifer (ft or m), HSW = height of surface water at receiving node above aquifer bottom (ft or m), and HCB = height of channel bottom above aquifer bottom (ft or m). Note that QL can also be expressed in inches/hr for US units.

    ... but you would need to determine the A1, B1, etc. coefficients based on the properties of the perforated pipe. The coefficients are found in the catchment properties when "Apply groundwater" is set to true) 

    If you are looking for a more detailed and comprehensive analysis of groundwater, OpenFlows FLOOD may be a suitable option. Please let us know if you need further guidance with that.
