Diurnal Patterns not Syncing with Run Times

I have diurnal patterns set up in my model, but when I start the model run at a time other than 12:00 AM (the start time of all my patterns), the model does not appear to choose the correct multiplier accordingly (if I start the run time at, say 4 AM, the model still uses the 12 AM multiplier).  Any ideas?

  • Hi Kori,

    Which product are you using? WaterGEMS? SewerGEMS?

    I was able to reproduce your problem with a test file. The diurnal pattern which you have set has a start time of 12:00 AM but your simulation starts at say 4:00 AM. The reason the pattern is picked up from 12:00 AM i.e. it still uses the 12:00 AM multiplier for the 4:00 AM time is because in the pattern you have not set the start time as 4:00 AM. The program will not automatically pick up from the table because sometimes 4:00 AM time and its multiplier could be interpolated based on before and after values.

    In the above pattern I have specified the pattern from 12:00 AM but started the simulation from 4:00 AM. Also I have specified the start time as 4:00 AM. This means the pattern will be applied from 4:00 AM on-wards and loop back to 4:00 AM (if 24 hour duration is used). As you can see 4:00 AM time and its multiplier here is an interpolated value from the table.

    Here is a relevant article that explains this;

    The pattern that I have assigned to my reservoir / demand / sanitary loading does not match the graph that I am getting from the reservoir / conduit / pipe in the model

    Hope this helps.

  • I am using SewerGEMS Connect Edition).  The model I am working with has many patterns, all of which use hourly multipliers.  The previous version of the model (constructed in the same version of the software) had no issues picking up the correct multiplier from the pattern, regardless of the start time.  Interpolation should not be required.  I have no idea why the software no longer recognizes the patterns correctly.  I have more than twenty diurnal patterns in my model, and it would not be efficient to have to go in and change the start time of every pattern every time I run a different scenario (they start at different times).

    I guess my option will be to redo all of my work in the older version of the model.

    Thank you for your advice.

  • Kori, this seems to be working for me, in the current release. For example if you look at the included Sample-1.stsw file (found in the "Samples" folder within the product installation folder) and change the calculation options start time, you will see hydrograph patterns change accordingly (while the sanitary load pattern start time remains 12 AM). Please try this in the sample file, to help determine if the problem is with your model, or with your SewerGEMS version.

    Also, please let us know which numerical solver you are using (as seen in the calculation options) and what your SewerGEMS version number is, as seen under File > Help > About? If it is the original CONNECT Edition release (10.00.XX.XX), you may need to upgrade to the latest version, 10.02.00.55 (CONNECT Edition update 2). I checked the list of fixes in previous versions and did not notice anything that seemed to match this issue.

    If you find that the issue is model-specific, please provide a copy of the model files, (.STSW and .SQLITE, zipped) along with steps to reproduce the issue: Sharing Hydraulic Model Files on the OpenFlows Forum

  • I am using the current version of the Connect Edition (Update 2).  I am using the SWMM solver (SWMM Engine 5.1.012).  I have not had problems with this combo until this current model - I am hoping it is model specific.  To reproduce the issue, simply run the base scenario as is.  It should shift, but it doesn't.  This is true for all three scenarios.  I have uploaded the files using the secure method.  I have never had this pattern shift issue in a Bentley product, having used SewerGEMS and WaterGEMS.

  • Kori,

    Try to compact the database manually using these instructions and if that does not help copy the .stsw.sqllite file for the project and isolate it in a different folder than the other files for the project. Then use the File > Import method to open the database file and see if that resolves the problem. This wiki is not for the specific problem that you've outlined, but the solutions for it are what you should try.
