Calculating flow in WaterGEMS

Hello,

I want to model an existing conduction line which takes the water from a reservoir to three different tanks which are located at different elevations. What I want to know is the flow that will reach each tank but I don't really know how to actually do it. I know that WaterGEMS is a demand driven software but in this case what I want to know is if the flow thar reaches each tank is enough to satisfy the demand I have. Can this be possible with WaterGEMS?

  • I was thinking, all I want to know is how the flow will distribute to the three tanks but I don't have an outlet for any of them so this could give me a problem as they get full, so my other questions is can I simulated them as reservoirs in this case?

  • Hello Jose,

If you have a reservoir and three tanks, the flow between the elements will be based on the hydraulic grade at the nodes. Flow will go from a high hydraulic grade to a low one. If you take a simple example of a reservoir and one tank, if the hydraulic grade in the reservoir is higher than the hydraulic grade in the tank, the flow will go from the reservoir to the tank.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

Thanks for your answer. I understand what you are saying but in the case that I have a reservoir at an elevation of 1000m and three tanks(at 500m, 600m and 400m respectively) with different pipe diameters between them and the reservoir is there a way I can see how much of the flow coming out of the reservoir goes to each tank?

  • Jose,

Do you want to know the flow coming from the reservoir to each tank or the percentage of water that comes from the reservoir to each tank? This video should help you to set up a trace analysis that shows the percentage of water that comes from the reservoir to each tank. There is also a quick start lesson on water quality analysis that describes all the steps for setting up a trace analysis that can be accessed by going to File > Help > Quick Start Lessons.

  • Thank you Mark, I'll have a look!

Out of curiosity, is there a way to see the flow coming from the reservoir to each tank instead of just the percentage?
