Creating model active/inactive sub-systems

Hello,
I have built a large water supply model with 27 zones.

I would like to model some zones without computing the entire model.

Can I create sub-systems ? Would I use Active/Inactive topology to effectively turn off / turn on different zones when i'm modelling ?

Thank You,

  • Hello Tracey,

Yes you are on the correct track, you can make zones inactive which you don't want to model at the moment so those elements will not be considered for modeling.

Here is reference for using active topology management.

  • Hi Sushma,

    Great, thanks very much.

    This is my logic:

Base EPS (Trunk and all zones)

    • Base Alternative (Wingham Zone) - can make this large zone Inactive and run rest of model
    • Base Alternative (Irkanda Zone) - can make this large zone Inactive and run rest of model

From these I was going to create Scenarios

Issue:   I'm trying to create the above Alternatives however I can't work out how to select just the Wingham Zone elements or just the Irkanda Zone elements.

The Active Topology Alternative set of tabulated flextables don't show the Zone column and I can't add the Zone column. I've tried a work around by creating a Selection Set of the entire Wingham Zone containing all it's elements but I can't seem to use the Wingham Selection Sect to create the Wingham Alternative.

    Can you help ?

    Thanks, Tracey

  • Hello Tracey,

    What you would do is

    • First create the required alternatives and scenarios. Give names of zones to the alternatives for identification purpose and to the scenarios as well. E.g. Wingham Zone physical alternative, Wingham Zone active topology alternative etc.
    • Assign corresponding alternatives e.g. active topology alternative, demand alternative, physical alternative to respective newly created scenario.
    • Now make the new scenario e.g. Wingham Zone as current scenario, where you want to make e.g. all elements of Wingham Zone active and rest inactive. With Wingham Zone as the current scenario and provided you have created respective physical and active topology alternative as well and assigned to the scenario, access active topology.
    • In active topology window click on selection set so it will highlight Wingham Zone elements in drawing. And make them active inactive as per your preference.

Alternative will not have zone columns, flex tables will have zone column. With flex table approach you can open flex table on selection and make elements inactive but you will have to do it separately for pipes, junctions etc.
