WaterGEMS for Civil3d Removes the Ribbon or Does Not Load Correctly

Good morning brain trust!  Before and after the most recent update, I have been having issues with WaterGEMS for Civil3d not playing nice.  I have ruled out hardware issues as I have removed and replaced hardware and for the most part have ruled out the software for both as I completely removed both softwares from computer and did a clean install of each program.  After the initial run of WaterGEMS for Civil 3d (which worked fine), I am unable to get it to work correctly.  I get one of two issues:

1. I get the error messages to the point where it is in constant loop and have to task manager kill the Civil3d instance or

2. The ribbon is gone (both Civil3d and WaterGEMS) but it says WaterGEMs is loaded.

My typical workflow is that I use my coordinate system and aerial/topo in Civil3d to draw my water and sewer layouts then go back into the native Bentley programs to actually make adjustments and run my scenarios so I would like to keep this workflow if possible.

Thanks in advance!

  • or I get this.  Now I will say that I noticed this....when trying to load WaterGEMS it looks like it is trying to do it in German maybe?

  • Good afternoon!  Just checking in to see if you had any insight as to how I am messing this up :-)

  • ) Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit WaterGEMS/AutoCAD? Check under the WaterGEMS About window, bottom-left corner. In AutoCAD I believe this is located in the "About" window accessed from the dropdown next to the question mark button in the upper-right corner.

    64-bit

    2) Can you confirm that this happens before a model is even opened? It is curious that the program is taking up what appears to be a large amount of memory, suggesting something else may have been done in the program before the crash occurs. If this is the case, please provide details, and also test to see if it happens if you simply open one of the Sample files.

Yes I can confirm that I am getting errors before I open a drawing.  Clicking the WaterGEMS for Civil3d Imperial link opens Civil3d and then the errors come in.  This occurs after I do a model successfully after having to remove both instances of Civil3d and WaterGEMS and reinstall.

    4) You mentioned that you use the AutoCAD integrated platform to use your "coordinate system and aerial/topo to draw your water and sewer layouts". The Standalone version of WaterGEMS can import a number of different file types as background layers, in addition to Bing Maps for topo/road/aerial. Also, you can use ModelBuilder to import any existing line work (in your desired coordinate system) to create model elements. See more here: CAD Functionality in Standalone as an Alternative to AutoCAD or MicroStation Integration

My workflow consists of getting 3D elevation from Infraworks brought into Civil3d to translate the project site from Infraworks LL84 to Civil3d which I setup as MO83-CF.  From there I will use Water/SewerGEMS to tag houses/businesses and use the program to initially layout the pipelines and pump house(s).  I then export the dxf file of the site and open in standalone WaterGEMS so I am not cluttered on the screen.  I then run loadbuilder using DXF contours to provide elevation date to the nodes that I set in Civil3d.  If I want to bring bing in I will pick three points to encompass the sites and get the coordinates from google earth and tag those three points based on the coordinates that are based on MO83-CF.  So far, this is working pretty good.  I think that however maybe I will just try drawing in my pipeline as a polyline in Civil3d and export that as a DXF and be done with it.  So thank you for the suggestion.

    3) Can you provide a copy of the WaterGEMS log file? See: Locating OpenFlows product error log file

I will get that sent over today or tomorrow.

  • Just following up to see if I missed something or if you guys are still working on a solution as I am still having issues even with a recent update.

  • Hello,

I don't see the WaterGEMS log file mentioned by Jesse above. Are you able to send that to us?

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Hello,

Please try re-registering the following files manually and let us know if you get any messages during the registration by following these steps:

Run command prompt as an administrator and change directory to the WaterCAD installation location (default path is: c:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\WaterGEMS\x64), and run the following commands:

    %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\regasm.exe Haestad. WaterGEMS.ComClient.Controls.dll /unregister
    %WINDIR%\System32\regsvr32.exe Haestad. WaterGEMS.ComClient.Interfaces.dll
    %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\regasm.exe Haestad. WaterGEMS.ComClient.Controls.dll /codebase

If these commands are successful, trying running Civil3D and see if that fixes the issue. If not, please send the dump file that is generated when the "Object reference" error occurs.

    Regards,
    Scott

  • When I try to run the first command I get the following:

  • Hello,

There might be a typo in there. There looks like there is an extra space at "Haestad. Watergems.comclient..." Try again without the space between the "Haestad." and "Watergems" to see if that makes a difference.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Scott - Thank you that helped and all three were successful however the first time I ran it I got this screen (note no ribbon and I have what appears to be german down at the bottom):

The second time I got and error which I am getting this screen

Autodesk dump files have been uploaded.

  • Hello,

The issue is looking like it may be related to Civil3D, given the AutoCAD error that is generate.

One more thing that the developers recommend is to reset the Civil3d settings to default by going to the Start > Civil 3d > ”Reset Settings to Default”. Once settings are set to default, it will restore it to the plain version of Civil 3d without any 3rd party (including ours) integration enabled.

Open the plain version of Civil3D. If this opens okay, reintegrate WaterGEMS using the integration tool and and test again to see if WaterGEMS for Civil3D works.

    Regards,
    Scott

  • Scott -

Thank you for your time and patience.  I am not sure what is going on but at this point I am just going to run GEMS outside of Civil3d.  I have done both the reset settings to default and integration tool and the issues did reappear.  I did remove the german writing as it is an issue with one of the optional extensions Civil3d has (DACH Extension)  So for now my workflow will be to export to DXF contours, points, and any existing line work and go from there.  I appreciate the help.  - NKG
