CivilStorm - Modeling Culvert Overtopping (Roadway) with Outfall

I am trying to model a culvert with an overtopping weir (paved roadway). This culvert outlets offsite so I have designated the Stop Node as a Headwall - Free flowing Outfall. When I select the "Has overtopping Weir?" as TRUE in the Culvert properties and enter the pertinent information, I receive an error when running the program.

"ERROR 141: Outfall CulvE-EW has more than 1 inlet link or an outlet link."

When I change the "Has overtopping weir?" to FALSE, this error goes away. Is there another way I can model this scenario with the roadway as an overtopping weir? This culvert conveys water to a ditch off site (our receiving waters), and we would like to know the flow/volume entering this ditch. We have zero information of this ditch and our modeling bounds stop at the culvert outlet. We would like to model this culvert with the road as the overtopping weir. What can we use as an culvert stop node to achieve this? Or do we need to put in a "dummy ditch"? In all reality, this receiving ditch will have some water in it (likely not a free outfall), but I'm just getting the model setup as of now. I wanted to provide that tid bit of info, in case it changes your recommendation.

Snips to what I'm referring. Please let me know if you need additional info to help. Thanks!

  • Hello Laura,

    A dummy ditch with an outfall at the end did work for me when I tried to model your scenario in a test example. I modeled everything as you said with some general values for elevations and overtopping weir and was able to see the ERROR 141. However, when I modeled a conduit with outfall at the end (like a dummy ditch) I was able to get rid of the error and the model computed. I was of course using test values, but you can check for your case to see if the results are satisfactory. See the snapshots below of my setup;

    Let me know if this helps. I am sharing an article on using the headwall element for your reference;

  • Thanks! This helped! I just wasn't sure if there was another way besides the dummy ditches.
