Copy/Paste Model Elements in WaterGEMS/SewerGEMS?

I am using WaterGEMS v8i Connect Edition\

I used to use Innovyze InfoWater for all of my hydraulic modeling needs which had the ability to copy elements from one hydraulic model, and then paste them into a different model just like any other copy/paste interface that we are all used to with pretty much every computer program ever.  Bentley products don't seem to have this ability.  My use case is this: I have a 4000 link model and a 1000 link license.  I need to produce a hydraulic grade line for a single pipeline within the model but am unable to do so based on my license.  It sure would be nice to have the ability to copy the elements in question from the 4000 link model and then paste them into a new model file with only a handful of links so that the analysis can be run. Is this Bentley's attempt and preventing work arounds for their licensing structure?

  • Hello Nick,

The best option for your case may be to use submodels. You can highlight elements you want to export in the model, then go to File > Export > Submodel. This will export the elements that you selected as a database. You can then open a new model and import that database by going to File > Import > Submodel. You will want to make sure to import the submodel into a new model so that existing element properties are not overwritten. In addition, you will want to make sure that the appropriate boundary elements (reservoirs, tanks, pumps, etc.) are included in the submodel.

More information on submodels can be found in the submodel wiki on our Communities site.

  • Thanks Scott! That is certainly helpful and is the method that I am using. It would be nice if exporting the submodel also exported symbology so I did not have to recreate all of my symbology but I will live without that feature.  I appreciate you taking the time to answer!

  • Hi Nick, you can copy/paste symbology between models. See: Transferring color coding and annotations between elements and models
