Import elevation data in the form of pipeline profile represented by a CAD polyline

Recently I was tasked with a water supply project involving some water hammer calculations and had some trouble building the model.

I have the plane layout of the pipeline and the elevation data in the form of  pipeline profile represented by a CAD polyline, as shown in the images below. Please note the numerical values are not organized in a chart so I can't just pull it out of the DXF file.

I can use the ModelBuilder to import the plane layout of the pipeline, but I can't find a way to import the elevation data. It seems the TRex tool does not recognize data in such form, so is there some other way to do this?

    To import the elevation data using TRex tool you either need to have DXF contour data or DXF point data , or data in formats like Landxml or shapefile. 

    The image shows station values, but TRex will not just pull elevations out of a DXF file, you seem to have contours in your drawing which should have elevation data in z co-ords, please check that. More information on input data for elevations is provided below, please go through it.

  • Unfortunately I don't have the complete contour data covering the whole area and I'm trying to extract point data from the DXF and build a spreadsheet manually atm. If you find a smarter solution please do let me know, thanks a lot!

    I can see that you are using AutoCAD Civil 3D for the alignment. You can try exporting the alignment to a LandXML format which is recognized in TReX. If the alignment and the model entities in HAMMER (which would be there if you imported the alignment via ModelBuilder as you stated) are at the same coordinates you should get the elevations assigned.

    Another option is to look for some way where you can export this data into a tabular format. This could be copied to a spreadsheet application like MS Excel. 

    Another option (I am not sure this can work) is to directly use the DXF for model creation and TReX as well. I am assuming that this DXF would be 3D i.e. contain X, Y and Z (elevation) coordinates. There is an option in TReX to import DXF contours. See if that can help.

    If you are familiar on working with a GIS platform (such as ArcGIS) you could also import the DXF there and create a shapefile for the alignment which can be used.

  • I've found a way to export the X, Y coordinates to a spreadsheet and now I'm trying to prepare the data for the ModelBuilder. I think it would be very nice to have this manual procedure implemented as a feature in the future release. Thank you for your wholehearted support!
