Openflows FLOOD - Fluvial flooding plus Coastal flood

Good morning,

We have just acquired the Openflow FLOOD software.

We are working on a flood study for a coastal area which is located at the end of a valley in Gran Canaria. It is then required to analyse both effet, the ravine flood due to the rainfall plus the tidal floods and get the compound result.

Is this something that can be modelled with this software? Should we do it sepratly or is there any option to get join them toghether?

Thank you very much,

Silvia Aleman

  • Hello Silvia,

Yes, with OpenFlows FLOOD you can simulate both inland and coastal flooding.

With the coastal model engine you can explicitly simulate sea level from storm surge (wind, waves, atmospheric pressure). With this you can simulate nearshore flooding and even flooding along a river (if it exists in the area you're simulating).

With the inland (river and/or urban flood engine) you can simulate the impact of rainfall in the valley (river and overland flow) and use information from the coastal model to impose the sea level as boundary condition. With this you can assess the impact of high sea levels in the river drainage which can impact flooding upstream.

Here is a wiki article: Coastal flooding which talks about how you can set up a coastal flooding model if you already know the sea level. It may be useful.

In conclusion, it depends on your specific application. You can use both the coastal and inland engines together or separately.

Please let me know if you require any additional information.

    Kind regards,
    Luis
