Detention pond Modelling with Pond outlet Structure.

Good Evening.

I am modelling a Detention pond with POS and the downstream network leading to outfall. During the EPS, i am experiencing the HGL  downstream of POS is fluctuating above the Finished grade and Pond elevation while the HGL in pond is below the pond top. I am not able to understand what is that driving the HGL far above the FGL in gravity system.

Attached is model file and network file.

Appreciate feeedback comments and suggestion.

  • Hello Sudhakar,

Please upload DP_20HA_02A_NEWVERSION.stsw.sqlite files as well, which is a database file without which model cannot be opened.

    Sharing model files.

  • Hello Sudhakar,

If you look at the catchment graph of say catchment CA-1, you will observe that flow after 12.00hrs is indeed peak flow originated from the  storm data, which just passes through the pond into the downstream system.

The reason why HGL rises above the manhole HGL at peak hours is because depth / rise ratio is already 100 % in those pipes resulting in flooding and HGL rising above rim elevation. as seen in profiles.

  • Good Afternoon Sushma

First i should thank you for u r quick feedback.

My apologies for delay in responding.

With reference to ur response, i am still not able to understand the following points. Kindly review and respond . I am also attaching some graphs illustrating my query.

    1.  The  max HGL elevation of immediate upstream pond is around 5.8m only which is far below than the pond top elevation of +7.0m.

    2.   The Immediate downstream outlet pipe C1 has HGL higher than Pond HGL as can be seen in profile attached. What worries me is that HGL for pipe conduit is under pressure which should not be the case since there is an immediate Pond upstream which is open to atmosphere. Therefore if at all for any reason the pressure in pipe-c1  turns to be positive than this should be transfered to immediate pond . It is not practicle to have pond HGL low and pipe HGL high at the same time .

    3. Secondly the pipe c1 capacity is 5.63cum/s which is more than the max flow it is receiving . Hence what is the reason to have High HGL in conduit?

Looking forward to hear from you.

    Thanks and regards
