I'm trying to do a simple color code of pipes as either Active or Inactive. I've set up a new Pipe color coding legend using the "IsActive?" field with True = green and False = red. The active pipes appear properly as green, but the inactive show as the default color, not red. I have used "All Elements" as the Selection Set.
I was initially thinking that there was something wrong with my model so I constructed a simple 3 pipe network, and the same thing happens.
What am I doing wrong?
Display of inactive topology is actually controlled by Tools > Options > "Display Inactive Topology". You set the color of inactive elements here. This gives you the ability to color code by a property while also viewing which elements are inactive.
Thanks for your very quick reply! I really appreciate the help.
I have to say that the answer is not so intuitive (to me at least). So to make it work you have to set the color of inactive pipes in a totally different (and somewhat hidden) dialog box, then use the "IsActive?" field in a Symbology color coding item to set the Active color. Yes, it works, but it seems clunky to me.
And that begs the question: Of what use is the "IsActive?" field? The only two states are Active (true) and Inactive (false), and color coding by inactive (false) doesn't work, so why have it?
Inactive elements are essentially removed from the model A lot of folks like to simply hide the inactive elements so that they disappear from scenarios where they aren't included. For example, in your 2020 scenario, pipes laid in 2025 don't show up at all and you still have the ability to color code. Then when you switch to your 2025 scenario, those pipes appear and can be color coded. Those things couldn't happen if we treated Is active? as a typical property.
