How to split crossing pipes in bulk?

While building the model many pipes are crossing each other and I need to split them at the crossing point using junctions.

  • This applies only if there are already junctions lying close to a pipe, but if there are two pipes crossing each other and there are no junctions near the crossing then it does not show any pipe split candidate at that location.

    What I was looking for was that if two pipes are laid one over the other can the software generate a junction at that crossing so that the pipes get connected?

    What you see here are termed as "crossing pipes". Unfortunately, WaterGEMS cannot automatically generate a junction in cases where such pipe crossings are observed. However, in some cases such crossings are legitimate especially when you have express feeders crossing several pipes through their way. They dont connect with these pipes but do cross them.

    In this case you should identify such cases where the crossings are not really crossings but are joined together by a junction or signify an intersection of connecting pipes. In your case you should identify such locations and place junctions close to the crossings so that when pipe split is performed the pipes get divided.

  • The problem here has been cause by your data source whether  it is a CAD or GIS file. So that is where you should fix it. In that way, when you go back to the source file to update the model, it will be correct. If the GIS was drawn simply to be a map, then connectivity at intersections is not important and the drafting person can be careless. With modeling, connectivity at intersections is critical. The GIS needs to get it right.. So I would correct the GIS and rebuild the model. You'll be better off in the long run.

    If you built the model yourself, shame on you for not getting the connectivity right. Slight smile

  • Although the model was built in GIS and most of the connectivity issues were sorted out there itself, yet there can be small portions missed out in GIS. Making the corrections in GIS and rebuilding the whole model in WaterGEMS then will be quite a tedious task. It will be helpful, if such small corrections can be rectified in the model itself. If not as a separate command then atleast by manually identifying and making selections sets and running the operation in a bulk.

    1. Run the "Crossing Pipes" query from Network Navigator to identify all cases
    2. Use the Highlight button to make it easier to see the results while working on subsequent steps
    3. For each cross pipe case where you want the pipes to be connected, insert a junction at the point where they cross (choosing to split the pipe)
    4. Run the batch pipe split tool previously mentioned, to connect the pipes together.
