Pattern problems in WaterGEMS connect edition.

Currently I´m modelling a system that requires different patterns. I have 5 reservoirs. Two of them operate in a fixed way. However, the other 3 vary from day to day, somedays they are even inactive. For example this is how the 3 reservoirs operate all days of week:

  • Reservoir 1: Sunday from 6:00 am to 11:00 am from Monday.

                                 Tuesday from 8:00 pm to 11:am from Thursday

                                 Friday from 1:30 pm to 12:00 pm from Saturday

  • Reservoir 2: Monday from 11:15 pm to 12:15 am from Tuesday.  

                                Tuesday f rom 11:15 pm to 12:15 am from Wednesday

                                Sunday from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am from Monday

  • Reservoir 3: Monday from 11:15 pm to 12:15 am from Tuesday.  

                                Tuesday f rom 11:15 pm to 12:15 am from Wednesday

                                Wednesday from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am from Thursday.

                                Sunday from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am from Monday.

  • Reservoir 4: fixed
  • Reservoir 5: fixed

I don´t know if I have to create different scenarios to manage the operation or how to set them.

    What do the patterns represent? Is there a valve that closes at certain times and days to keep flow from coming out it? You may be able to use controls to open and close a pipe or valve connected to the reservoir based on the time from the start of the simulation, but we may need more information to provide any other possibilities.

    Patterns represent how reservoirs operate through the week in a real life system. However, I did not use any valve to control how water is controlled, just PSV and PRV to have adequate pressures with similar values to the ones seen in real life. 

    I already introduced patterns for reservoirs for each day of the week, but I do not know the next step.

    If the pattern is applied directly to the reservoir, these will change the hydraulic grade of the reservoir rather than change the flow like a demand pattern would do. More information can be found at this link.

    Are you saying that the reservoir information you originally posted are the actual measured flow? If so, it may be best to try to model what is in the system (such as the PSVs and PRVs you mentioned) and any pumps that may be associated with the reservoirs. While some calibration may be needed, if you can get everything set up correctly, the flow will hopefully match up with the observed flow.

    If you do need to force the reservoir to operate based on the times and days mentioned, a control on a pipe or valve connected to the reservoir could be used, as this will open and close the pipe as opposed to changing the hydraulic grade.

  • Thanks so much for your answer, Scott. Let me see if I understood correctly, now I created control sets for each day of the week. They have the right schedules of operation, are applied directly to the pipes connected to the reservoirs with the nearest node. After doing this, I created different operational alternatives with the name of each day of the week, created different scenarios with each day of the week aswell. Should the next step be a batch run with the 7 different scenarios? I can upload the model with the controls and the model without the controls to see how the program runs correctly without the controls.

    I hesitate to comment on the model files you shared without having a more clear understanding of exactly what these reservoirs represent and how they actually operate in the field. 

    When you refer to the reservoirs "operating" do you mean that valves open and close to allow flow out to supply demands, at a constant hydraulic grade? Having separate controls and control sets for different days with multiple scenarios would be a bit messy.

    If this really is a matter of opening and closing a valve based on time of day and ay of week, it might be easier to use a TCV node element with the relative closure pattern. This would enable you to have just one pattern per reservoir, and you'd be able to use one scenario to run the whole week. See: Configuring TCV relative closure patterns for EPS

    As a side note, I would suggest taking a look at the configuration of PSV-216, PRV-256 and PRV-325 which are all next to each other, set to active with a pressure setting of zero, but all different elevations.
