GIS Schema for preparing data for future model builder

I am trying to create the appropriate schema for data collection in GIS so that my client can collect water and sewer data and easily import to SewerGems/WaterGems using the model builder. Is there anywhere that lists the schema, or even just the different Gems objecst/attributes that we can use?

  • It's good to be thinking about issues before you start building the GIS. Does the GIS already exist or are you building  it along with the model?

The most basic question is "What is a pipe?" For a typical city block, do you have one pipe element from intersection to intersection or do you start a new pipe element at each gate valve or hydrant lateral. You can have one pipe per block or six depending on this decision.

Is a pump station a single point element in the GIS or do you capture each pump and its associated piping in the GIS. If you treat it as a single point in the GIS, how will you account for the individual pumps?

What is the nature of the data you will be using for demands? Are you going to account for each customer meter or will  your data be aggregated in some way?

There are a lot of these kinds of decisions and you need to consider the implications of each. It's good to think these thorough at the start. A lot will depend on you expected use of the model and availability/format of your data.

  • Thanks, we do understand the type of considers needed in the model, but are really just looking for the example schema (i.e. the list of each object used in the models and their specific attributes) to use in the data collection step that will be occurring soon. The data exists in part, but the client is having a full data collection effort coordinated. If we could use the information needed for the Gems models as a template for the GIS schema, we can get as much as possible of the correct data field collected in this effort. I thought that list would exist on the site somewhere, but I have not been able to track it down.
