Tank Eliminated and Water Age Increases

Hello,

I have a water model of a water distribution system that includes two water storage tanks. The Client would like to reduce water age in the system by eliminating one of the water storage tanks. However, when I make one of the water storage tanks in the model inactive (the Stockbridge Hill Tank), the average water age increases. If there is less water being stored in the system, I would expect the water age to decrease. Am I doing something wrong? I will upload the water model.

Please let me know if additional information is needed, thank you.

  • Hello Erica,

    You had posted something similar a while ago in the below forum post;

    WaterCAD - water age in tanks increases indefinitely

    Is this the same model you are working on? Did you try the troubleshooting steps we provided? As Jesse suggested try graphing the active tank for percent full or hydraulic grade along with the related pump flow to check if the controls are working properly and to understand how quickly the tank is cycling. It could be that water is not leaving fast enough in this case. Also, by keeping the other tank inactive, this tank could be filling more often with more water being stored than released. I would advise you to go through the below article to troubleshoot water age results if not already done so;

    Troubleshooting water age results

    If you have tried the troubleshooting steps before from the earlier forum post we would need to take a look at the updated model files (.wtg, .wtg.sqlite) to test this. Please upload the files as per this article.
