modelling wells

Hi,

what information is required when modelling a well supplying water into the water distribution system. The current distribution system has 2 elevated storage tanks and the main supply in the village is via 3 wells?

Thanks.

  • M,

I think your question is a a little too general to be provided with a complete answer. I think a good answer is that the more information you provide in your model the more accurate and robust your results will be, so I suppose it depends what you're using model for, how much data you have on the system, and the accuracy of results you're expecting to get. The minimum amount of information you would need is the data for the 2 elevated storage tanks (size, elevations of inlet/outlet, etc...) , the pump curve and elevation data for the 3 wells, and maybe a few known large demands in the village. You're going to have to much more specific about what you're trying to do and accomplish if you want more information about how to model your water network.

  • Currently, one of their existing elevated storage tanks needs a lot of maintenance. The village would like to evaluate if replacing the tank  at a new location is ideal and what are the pressures if so. I have the information required for modelling the system with the elevated storage tanks, and associated demands however I have never modelled  system, where wells were the main source of supply. I am not sure if that has to be included in the system. I am also trying to go back to ask for additional information regarding the wells but not sure what information I will need to input into the model. Would I essentially model it using a reservoir  and a pump?

    Thanks.

  • Got it. That's a good question. This is one I learned from Dr. Walski that is always good advice to reiterate. When you're unsure of what to include in the model the general rule is to try to represented as much from the field in the model as possible. The more you can do that more accurate your model should be. Yes, you model the well as a reservoir with a pump.  This wiki will explain how to model a submersible pump in WaterCAD if that's what you're working with. If you need to account for well draw down this wiki explains how you can do that.

I hope that helps out a bit
