Shapefile problem

I have asked my surveyor to provide me with shapefile of a network 

So they provided me with the same but their are some errors coming in that file .

1. Like the junctions are visibly connected but not connected exactly

2. how to attach elevation data inside the network file

3. the diameter also the software is not taking in 

  I am attaching images to show that pipes are not really getting connected

Also i am attaching the concerned shape file

  • Your situation is not unique.  The surveyor really doesn't care about pipe connectivity, just how the system looks (when not zoomed in).  But proper connectivity is an absolute must with WaterCad.

    Have you tried the Model Builder utility in WaterCad?  It allows you to specify a tolerance value such that if two pipe endpoints are within the tolerance distance but not connected, it will connect them. 

    If you have tried Model Builder but still have connectivity issues you have two choices: 1) Ask the surveyor to fix the connectivity issues (assuming he knows which pipes should connect), or 2) Do it yourself.

    Having run into this problem more than once, I suggest you fix the connectivity yourself.  That way you know the pipes are connected properly. 

    You are most likely going to spend a LOT of time checking and fixing connectivity and attribute issues (missing diameters, materials, etc), but in the end it is time well spent since you will then have confidence in the integrity of your data.

    How do I do it myself can you suggest some easy way, I tried batch pipe split is that the only way?

    Secondly, how do I ask my surveyor to embed the elevation data 

    Also software is not taking in diameter data even though its mentioned in the shape file parameters

  • The best place to start is View > Navigator > Network navigator > Network Review.

    From here you can look at Crossing pipes, Duplicate pipes and Pipe split candidates.

    If you want to start over, set up ModelBuilder and look into the Option "establish connectivity using spatial data".

    If you plan to use CAD data for future model building, it would be good to clean up those files.

    For importing elevation data, look into Tools > Trex (terrain extraction)

    There are good instructions on how to do this with the program. But you may also want to take an on demand class on these features .

    Thanks mr tom i know about this feature 

    but the elevation data is not inside the shapefile how do i add data into that?

  • I'm not a WaterCad expert, so the following is based on my personal experience with the same kind of issues you have.

    Regarding elevation data, if your surveyor has it, it should be a simple matter for him to import it into the shapefile he provided you with. Plus, there are other ways (within WaterCad) to import data - the problem with that is getting the elevation data associated with the proper point.  If you imported the shapefile ID (or other unique identifier) into WaterCad, ask your surveyor to append the elevation data to the shapefile you imported, then import it again using Model Builder, only specifying the ID and elevation fields to be imported.

    Look at WaterCad "Help" regarding importing data.  Maybe a spreadsheet file would be easier to work with?  WaterCad is great in that it can work with so many different kinds of data.

    Regarding diameter data, in the shapefile, is it a numeric or text field? Sounds like it must be text.  GIS programs can use and display both types, however , you need it as a number.  Again, an easy fix if the info already exists in the shapefile.  If you are using an ESRI product it's an easy matter to convert text to a number and place it in another field.  Then import the numeric diameter data into WaterCad via Model Builder.
