How to know if pipes are connected or not by a node?

I have transfered a drawing from AutoCAD to WaterCAD V8i and I see the pipes and also de nodes. The problem is that although I see nodes in some pipes that either cross other pipes or that stop (connect) to other pipes, but I'm not sure if there is connectivity or not. How can i check if that node is really connecting both pipes that might be in a "T" or an "X" configuration.

Im in the early part of seting up the model so I can't run it quite yet.

Thanks

  • Hello,

WaterCAD has some great tools for this type of model review. Go to View > Network Navigator. Click the gray arrow button at the top-right corner and click Network Review, then "Crossing pipes". This will find a list all pipes that are crossing over each other, without a junction at the intersection. You can then click the zoom to button or highlight button to see where they're located and then make any necessary corrections. I would recommend checking out some of the other queries in Network Navigator, which you may also find useful.

  • We have all sorts of tools to help you with this, primarily in the form of Network navigator queries.

Go to View > Network navigator > Network review and chose between queries such as "nodes in close proximity", ""orphaned nodes", "crossing pipes" etc. to help you troubleshoot your model.

Once you get the big problems cleaned up, then Analysis > Validate is also very helpful

  • That Jesse is quick, isn't he.

Of course, both our answers assume that you actually know how the pipes are connected. In most cases, if pipes form a T or X they are connected, but there are important exceptions, especially when two pressure zones are involved. In that case, you may need to go back to record (as-built) drawings to find the correct connectivity or ask some experienced workers who keep this information in their heads.

  • One of the things that throws me off is that at certain "T" or "X" connections I do see a node, and the review tool sees them too, but when I click on one of the pipes it highlights the entire section on both sides of the node (meaning that in a T situation it would highlight as two main pipes) so I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be or not. Now, when I right click on the node/junction it gives me the option of "Split" and if I do that, then the pipe gets split and not I can highlight as three pipes around the T junction. Do I need to Split every junction for it to be a real connection?

     Thanks

  • Plus when I move the node it moves freely with on of the pipes leaving the otherone behind, if there is a connection between pipes by that node/junction shouldn't all pipes going into the node/junction move while moving the node?

If so, why is it that when transfering my CAD drawing to WaterCAD it doesn't join any of my pipes and only puts a "floating node"?
