shapfiles imported by modelbuilder

dear all,

i have a problem with shapefiles imported through model builder.after using model builder most of the junction is disconnected to pipes also some lines is dissconnected from main lines.you know this need great effort so that i can reach to a model which can be run on watergems.

this happens although the files appear to be connected in arcmap.

i  dont know why?

also, i need to know what are the advantage of using geometric networks or feature geodatabase options that appear in modelbuilder for users working under arcmap?

  • It sounds like your pipes and junctions are very close to each other in ArcGIS, but not connected together in a network.

If you use a geometric network in ArcGIS, then ArcGIS will manage the connectivity of elements and let you set up connectivity rules. So if you already have a good geometric network set up in ArcGIS, then it would be better to import that.

However, if you don't have a geometric network set up, ModelBuilder can establish the connectivity for you. Depending on the version you are using, you should see two options like this in the ModelBuilder wizard:

'Create nodes if none found at pipe endpoint?'

    'Establish connectivity using spatial data?'

Make sure both of these options are checked. If you check the 'Establish connectivity...' option you will also need to enter a tolerance (e.g. 1 ft). This means that any pipes that have end nodes within one foot of each other will be connected together into a network. (Note: you should keep this tolerance small, otherwise it might connect together pipes that are not supposed to be connected.)

There is also some good help about ModelBuilder here: communities.bentley.com/.../building-a-model-using-modelbuilder-tn.aspx

Regarding feature geodatabases, if you store your ArcGIS data in an ESRI geodatabase, you can import that directly when running within ArcMap. If you don't use a geodatabase, then this option isn't much use to you.

with your shapefile attached in a zip file and I will be happy to have a look at it and let you know exactly what the problem is. Please dont forget that your shapfile is made up of three files (.SHP), (.SHX), (.DBF).  As long as the total zip file size is under 5 MB it can be sent through the email as an attachment.
