WaterGems VSD Pumps in Parralel and error message 41797

I am using Watergems V8i series 3, and trying to model a pump station with two identical VSD pumps in parallel. When I set the pumps up in parrallel, i.e. by just making them have a common node on either side of the pumps, the system balances but only uses one pump. I have used identical controls for the identical pumps and they are both running of the same control node. I was after some pointers on how to properly set up pumps in parrallel?

Note, i realise that as they are identical pumps I could just make them one pump and double the flow but I am hoping to model surge using HAMMER later on with this model and there would be implications for this. (I have done this and the system worked)

Also, when I run the model I get error message 41797 that states "variable speed pumping is not supported by EPANET; results may not match EPANET" and was wondering what this means? The model i am working on was converted to gems from an existing EPANET Model and i think this may just be a hangover warning to state that i may get different results when using EPANET. the model still appears to run and balance even though this warning shows up.

Thanks all,

  • You should use the variable speed pump battery to model this situation. See the Help for that element type.

With regard to the EPANET message, in the calculation options, make sure you are not using "EPANET" under "Engine Compatibility". EPANET cannot model variable speed pumps the way WaterCAD/GEMS does.

  • Thanks Tom for the response. I do have EPANET selected under Engine Compatibility, when I change this to WaterGems i get an "Engine Calculation Failed" message and an error number 41110 and it says "Cannot solve network hydraulic equations." any suggestions?
